Coaching career

Wilson has coached the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, New England Patriots, and the Washington Redskins. Wilson was hired in January 2007 as the Pittsburgh Steelers running backs coach after Dick Hoak retired. He was hired when Mike Tomlin took over the team after Bill Cowher resigned early in 2007. At the college level, Wilson has coached at Pasadena City College, Los Angeles Southwest College, Southern Illinois, Wyoming, USC and Iowa State. Kirby is a member of Iota Phi Theta fraternity.

Prior to making the jump to the NFL, he coached RB Troy Davis to a year where he ran for over 2,000 yards^[1] in 1995 and over 2,100 yards^[2] in 1996.

He interviewed for the Baltimore Ravens vacant offensive coordinator job last year, so the league must be high on him.

He may very well turn out to be a great OC, however, I really think they Jags are beyond the point where we are grooming coaches and./or taking risk on unproven coaches; especially with a 2nd year QB

Minnesota after serving as the Pittsburgh Steelers RBs coach for the past 7 seasons.

Has coached 4 of the top-25 RBs in NFL history (Emmitt Smith, Curtis Martin, Edgerrin James and Thomas Jones).

Worked with Steelers rookie RB Le’Veon Bell in 2013. Despite missing the first 3 games of the season, Bell’s 1,259 scrimmage yards broke a franchise rookie record.

Coached Steelers RB Rashard Mendenhall to back-to-back 1,000-yard rushing seasons in 2009-2010.

The Steelers rushing attack finished 3rd in the NFL in 2007 averaging 135.5 yards per game.

I'd rather have an experienced OC, mainly because Gus is a defensive guy.   We need someone who can just take over the whole offense without any supervision.   There has to be a high level of trust there, and that would require some experience, in my mind.

I agree. I would prefer to go the experienced, previous success, history developing QB route as well if at all possible.

I'm not sure I even have a problem with his experience.  Those position coaches likely have to know as much about the offense as the coordinator.  But I'd have to wonder what the identity and direction of the team would be to have a defensive coordinator as a head coach and a RB coach as OC...

But here we are with a very young offense, and we're supposed to turn it all over to a guy who has never created a playbook, or a game plan?

Same here, but if they feel Scelfo can get the job done with Blake then it makes sense for them to grab the guy you believe will best call the plays.

Wilson once was in line to become offensive coordinator with the Steelers, but he was severely burned in a kitchen fire early in 2012 and was unable to fill that job when Bruce Arians’ contract was not renewed weeks later. Wilson gradually returned to coaching that year and resumed his duties as running backs coach in 2012.
