I think a bigger challenge is whether Trestman would lose any guaranteed $$ by taking the OC job.  He still had time left on his $4.5m contract with the Bears.  It may not benefit him to even take a job this year if the Bears are on the hook for his salary if he remains unemployed.

What if OC candidates are reluctant to come here because Bradley has been here two seasons and is 7-25? That's not exactly solid footing. A candidate could think one of two things. If the team underachieves again, Gus could be fired and MAYBE the OC gets a shot to replace him. Or more likely, if Gus gets canned, the whole staff goes with him, and the OC is out after a year. A more accomplished OC might shy away from here, while a young guy wanting his shot might take the risk.

 

Big risk, big reward.  

 

Come in here, turn this thing around, and you'll be on everyone's short list for HC jobs...

 

Lots of young players to work with...  Lots of cap room...

Typically, any salary he makes would come off the amount the Bears have to pay him. It wouldn't be the money for him, but the opportunity to keep his resume current. This would point to his looking for the job with the best potential for making him look good, rather than the highest salary.


 

I guess it depends on what Trestman thinks of Bortles future and the Jags roster compared to other potential jobs.

No word yet but I feel like he will definitely get an interview this week. I heard that the Broncos might fire Fox and hire Gase as the HC so I doubt we get Gase. No one from the Packers, maybe Bevell from Seattle.

I believe this as well. He did some nice things with a young Cutler and helped Schaub reach career highs under his watch.

Personally,  I want an OC with play calling experience.   There's a fine line with regard to preparing for a game and those immediate decisions every OC has to deal with in getting a play called in 10 seconds following the end of the prior play.

 

That said, Kirby "may" be able to do that but I'm so tired of getting dudes that learn on the job here in Jacksonville.

Very real possibility. I feel like that would be the time for Shad to step in and flex his $$ muscle. If Gus has his eye on someone and really wants him Shad needs to make him an offer he can't refuse and hopefully that's the deciding factor.

Agree. You want to be the best then you pay the best when it comes to OCs and DCs.


The best coaches surround themselves with good coordinators in the area they are weak at. A good offensive HC will find a top tier DC and a good defensive coach like Bradley needs a top tier OC.


JDR was a shining example of that. Coached the D just fine but the offense floundered and he didnt find a quality OC once Smith left for atlanta.
