2015 Free Agents - Who Do You Want?

Quote:If the Jags feel that they can land Leonard Williams of USC with the 3rd pick and place him in the 5TechniqueDE which Red Bryant plays and which Alualu shares then it makes sense to make a play for JPP of the Giants.

JPP will be a hot commodity on the market if the Giants let him walk, but there is another intriguing pass rusher potentially available.

Has anyone considered Jerry Hughes of the Bills, the former Rd 1 pick of the Colts several years back.

He is not the same specimen as JPP, but he is fast around the corner.

---

BTW, I love the idea of Bryon Maxwell of the Seahawks.

Realistically, the Jags could target

Julius Thomas - TE - Broncos - 10 Mil/Season

DeMarco Murray - RB - Cowboys - 4 Mil/Season

Jason Pierre Paul - DE (Leo) - Giants - 10 Mil/Season - (10 sacks in 2014)

Jason Worilds -  OLB (Otto) - Steelers - 6 Mil/ Season - (6.5 sacks in 2014)

(that would be 30 MIl of the 60+ Mil of excess Cap Space available)

and then target

Daryl Williams - ORT - Oklahoma in Rd 3

DW is a 4 year starter for the Sooners and is the perfect ORT for the Jags to uplift the ground game.

I have heard rumors that Cody Prewitt's stock has fallen over the season and it may be possible to nab him at the top of Rd 4.

A sleeper that may fall is Jermain Whitehead of Auburn - who may be available in Rd 6 or Rd 7.
Hughes has been a pleasant surprise for us and the Bills are in talks with right now to resign. The problem with him is he plays on a line with 3 Pro Bowlers so it's hard to gauge how effective he really is. If he doesn't demand top money, I can see the Bills signing him. If he's asking for more I can see us letting him walk.

Quote:I have been thinking about adding C.J. Spiller to be my list of Free Agents. He is from Lake Butler so the Jags would be like coming home. He has had two injury filled years but when healthy is a 1000 yard runner who can catch screen passes. Mostly though I think he could platoon with DRob and provide the Jags a real running game along with Toby Gerhart. I don't think he will command a large contract, certainly no more than Gerhart.
Outside of the Chan Gailey years, Spiller hasn't been correctly utilized with the Bills. Our old OC Nate Hackett always tried to run him up the middle. He's definitely not a between the tackles runner and needs space to be effective. If he was used right, he would have been a dynamic weapon on our offense. Sad to see him go, but it would be nice if he went someplace where he could be successful.

I'm not sure if there are bad feeling between Marrone and Spiller which could be an issue with you guys. There's a lot of chatter that he'll land with Jets who just signed Gailey as an OC.

Spiller can also be an absolute FORCE in the KR game as well.. Very elusive.. However using him as a KR could also risk injury, which he is a magnet for

Without a doubt. While he does have some injury concerns, he does have low mileage on him. I don't see him fitting in the Bills' plans this year, so whoever signs him, is getting a great player.

Everybody on this board has thought about it at some point since the off-season began, so let's have a discussion on the Free Agent options at ORT.

Candidates:

1. Brian Bulaga - ORT - Packers - 6'5" 314 lbs - 26 Yrs old in 2015

He is the sexy pick for just about every team in need of an upgrade at ORT. He is a former Rd 1 pick of the Packers who drafted him to play the OLT spot, but he torn his ACL and a Rd 4 pick took his spot at OLT, so the Packers moved him to ORT. Interestingly it was in his 4th year in the league, the 2014 season did he play with any consistency as to warrant value as a former Rd 1 selection. We should keep this in mind when we think of Joeckel.

Bulaga is going to require top dollar to sign him and that could be in the 8 to 9 Mil per season range. The Packers want to re-sign him and it is said that he wants to re-sign with the Packers so it could be that a Home Town Discount could be achieved and Bulaga is re-signed by the Packers. The Packers have the money and the flexibility to re-sign him so the chances of him hitting the market in my opinion is probably less than 50%.

2. Orlando Franklin - 6'7" 320 lbs - Broncos - 27 Yrs old in 2015

Franklin was drafted in the 2nd Rd of the 2011 draft as an OLT, which is the position he played at Miami. The Broncos tried him at ORT, but moved him to OLG when Beadles was lost in Free Agency. Franklin like Bulaga is a road grader and the fact that he can play multiple positions on the Oline is a Big Plus.

Franklin will not demand the same as Bulaga but the price tag will still not be cheap - say 7 to 8 Mil per season.

3. Derek Newton - 6'6" 313 lbs - Texans - 28 Yrs old in 2015

Newton is a former Rd 7 selection in the 2011 draft. He has been a starter for the Texans the past several years and has been helpful in establishing a dominant running game for the Texans. Other than Bulaga, Newton graded out the highest of the Free Agent ORTs by Pro Football Focus. Newton is a surprisingly adept pass blocker as well as a run blocker.

Newton may command between 6 to 7 Mil per season to sign.

4. King Dunlap - 6'9" 330 lbs - Chargers - 30 Yrs old in 2015

Another former Rd 7 pick out of Auburn. While a bit older than the top 3, Dunlap has developed into a very nice ORT for the Chargers adept at both Pass Blocking and Run Blocking. The Chargers want him back so no one knows whether he hits the market but if he does, he definitely is an option for the Jags.

Dunlap will command between 5 to 7 Mil per season to sign.

5. Doug Free - 6'6" 325 lbs - Cowboys - 32 Yrs old in 2015

Free may be the most accomplished of the ORTs that potentially hit the market. Free missed 5 games in 2014 due to some foot injuries and in his place Jermey Parnell, another Free Agent ORT played fairly well. Since Parnell is the younger of the two (by 3 years) it is thought that the Cowboys will opt for Parnell over Free, especially since Parnell may command less money. Still Free comes from the Cowboy running system and would be a calming and teaching force for the Jags young Offensive line. If Free is signed then the Jags need to draft his replacement to start in perhaps the 3rd year. For a 2 year rental, Doug Free could offer an upgrade to the Jags.

Due to his age, Free will not land the bigger contract - say around 5 Mil per season.

6. Jermey Parnell - 6'6" 307 lbs - Cowboys - 29 Yrs old in 2015

Parnell has been in the league for 5 years primarily as a backup. The last four have been with the Cowboys and he finally got some playing action in 5 games in 2014. It is rumored the Cowboys will pick between Free and Parnell and the betting action is that the Cowboys will save some money by signing Parnell over Free. Parnell is most valuable to the Cowboys over any other team where he is Just a Guy (JAG).

In my mind not really an option but I have offered it here because who knows what Dave Caldwell thinks.

So there are the six Free Agent ORT. I am sure we all would love to sign Bulaga, but Franklin offers some value as does Newton, Dunlap and Free. If the Jags sign anyone other than Bulaga or Franklin then they had best draft an ORT in Rds 3, 4 or 5.

I will provide a breakdown of the OTs in the 2015 Draft Class in the Mock Draft section under College Football.

You are right. I have also taken the bold into consideration.

Nice post.

Dunlap is absolutely massive with the name to match lol. Doesnt he also get injured a lot? Last year was the first time in his career that played in full 16 game season.

On the whole, I agree with what you've got here. If we can't land Bulaga, Franklin would be a very nice consolation prize. Unlike Beadles, Franklin was a standout lineman for the Broncos, not just the guy who benefited from the system in an inconspicuous position (*cough*Beadles*cough*).

Some will question your leaving Joe Barksdale off, but don't count me among them. He's an unimpressive player, and reminds me very much of Beadles in all the wrong ways.

Everyone is salivating for the chance to sign Devin McCourty of the Patriots to play the FS position for the Jags. Yet in our heart of hearts we know that Devin McCourty most likely will sign with the Patriots again. So who else is out there that could be that single high FS that could cover the field sideline to sideline. There appears to be a number of Strong Safety candidates that cover that part of the field inside the numbers but that is not what the Jags seek, because that requires a Safety that is more of a sub-4.5 - 40 runner rather than a 4.6 to 4.65 - 40 runner.

Perhaps it is time to start thinking outside the box? Devin McCourty was drafted as a CB in Rd 1 for the Patriots but they slide him over to FS to make room for Revis and Browner.

Perhaps the Jags need to be looking for a Free Agent CB that has some experience at Free Safety?

Such a man exists on the 49ers roster in

Chris Culliver - 6'0" 199 lbs - 4.4 - 40

2014 Stats as a CB: 45 TT, 4 INTs and 15 Pass Defended

The man has the hands for the INT and is the 49ers lead CB, so he will want to be paid like a top CB, and I say "Pay Da Man" and then slide him over to Free Safety, which he played at South Carolina his Jr Season.

Culliver is a BIG CB who could fit what the Jags need a FS.

He may cost the Jags 6 to 7 Mil but I think he just might be want the Jags are seeking.

Your Thoughts?

With Marrone and Hackett coming over from Buffalo, will they attempt to bring C.J. Spillman to Jax or is Spillman to much like Denard Robinson?

Under Marrone and Hacket, Spiller was often looked at as the odd man out. They never utilized Spiller to suit his strengths and simply tried to run him up the middle. He has his best production under Gailey so I think he's going to the Jets to work with him again.

I read an article a few weeks about that mentioned C.J. Spiller's high praise of Chan Gailey.   I definitely think the Jets are the favorites to land Spiller,  if he hits the open market as an UFA.     The new Jets regime needs to have more success with a speed RB option than the previous one did with the signing of Chris Johnson.

He can shred defenses if used correctly, so the Jets or any AFCE team are the last places I'd like to see him go. Hopefully, you guys can land him.

I just finished reading an article on potential Free Agent signees from the Oakland Raiders that the Jags might have some interest in.

One name is a total unknown because he has been on the Raider roster for three years but has been nicked up. He was slated to be the Raiders starting TE.

His name:

David Ausberry - TE - Raiders

6'4" 250 lbs - sub 4.5 - 40 speed coming out of USC

This is a guy that Olson knows about and may bring here to see if he can stay healthy and make a contribution.

Peter King said of him last year during his training camp caravan, that Ausberry was the most impressive unknown he had seen league-wide.

We are talking veteran minimum contract.

So remember the name.

I'm trying to make myself more informed and less opinionated.

Stop saying whatever stupid thing you're talking about and pay attention to all the interesting things I have to say!

We need McCourty and Bulaga. If Caldwell makes this happen then he gets an A+ for me for this FA. Biggest need on defense and offense respectively

I really think the Bills are going to look at him. The Bills need a guard and our new OC is Greg Roman who was the 49ers OC. The blocking scheme for his offense is supposed to be sort of difficult so they'll look to veterans. He seems like a good fit.

"ESPN Cleveland's Tony Grossi puts the Browns odds of re-signing Free Agent TE, Jordan Cameron at one percent."

If the doctors give the OK on Jordan Cameron and his concussion history, then he has to be high on the Jags list of potential Free Agent signees.
