Football as a sport is a meat grinder and the NFL version has the fastest motors and the sharpest teeth. That being said, my view is that once a player is drafted by another team and plays a season they are a "used" player. Sorry if I want my teams GM and scouting department to do their job and find our own stars instead of giving up early draft picks for players who have already been in the meat grinder.

Say we trade the number 3 pick to the Texans for J.J. Watt and in turn the Texans draft Leonard Williams. Williams racks up 15 sacks his rookie season and wins NFLDROY while here in Jacksonville J.J. Watt reinjures the ligaments in his elbow game six and is put on IR. Now we have a $100 million dollar player not contributing and the Texans have a younger, cheaper player producing. In that scenario you would probably still give Caldwell GM of the year with the way you think.

For starters the likelihood of Williams, let alone ANY rookie contributing 15 sacks is nil. That hasn't happened ever, I'm pretty sure, and I wouldn't expect the odds to favor that outcome now. I would be willing to bet on Watt, who hasn't missed a game in 4 years, including the elbow injury, continuing his dominance as the best defensive player in the league.

It is. You've just named 2 players (which didn't meet your threshold of 15 sacks BTW) out let's say 50 +/- DE/OLBs drafted every single year. That's a very small percentage and the draft is all about getting the most favorable outcome.

For Robert Quinn? Ummmmmm, yeah! Shocked by the number of people who wouldn't. How much more of an upgrade can you really get over a 25 year-old, multiple time Pro Bowler, who's averaged like 14 sacks the past three years, has the size and length that allows him to play RDE in a 4-3 (becoming more and more rare), plays the run pretty well, is a good dude off the field, and has missed one game in his entire career? Honestly, 5 more seasons like this and he's a strong HoF candidate.

Bubba Baker was born in Jacksonville but spent at least part of his youth in Newark, NJ.   I recall Bubba Baker telling stories that he used to play football with his friends at a cemetery in Newark.  He was a throwback player even in an era that's considered a throwback era,  compared to today.    Roger Goodell and co.  would have had a field day with Bubba Baker's bank account.
