Quote:I just lost my dog to a freak accident. He suffered, and had I known for sure he was going to die I would have euthanized him to save him from three days of agony.

Most vets will euthanize your pet. Around here they will do it for the cost of an office visit, as well as dispose of the remains via cremation, if you so desire.

10 years is old, but not ancient. My dog was 15, very old for any breed, especially a White German Shepherd. He slept a lot, but was outside roaming a lot, too. 02, is your dog sedentary by choice or circumstance?

White Shep. Beauty. I only knew of one other person who had one.

As you would probably know, the other comment was tongue in cheek to a question that sounded like devil may care.

You're right. Dog was probably too old.

Maybe next time ask on how to relieve your pet of pain and how to put them down, and not..hey any suggestions on how to kill my dog? That's the response you may get.

Tell that to the OP, not me. I didn't like the joke because it was too obvious.

Many posters seem to disagree with your approach on how you presented this message, I think it's just fine. Because by presenting it in this manner you are utilizing a defense mechanism where you shield yourself from the grief that comes associated with any thing we lose that we love.

But animal shelter, have them put to sleep or give the dog to them for a chance at another home. A bullet to the base of the skull in the woods is quick and easy too. It's not easy to do, but it's instant and they won't feel anything but for a split second.

So you don't have an issue with the OP? The one who you and other administrators approved to be an example on this MB.

My dog just eats and poops, any ideas on how to kill him?

That's ok, since you didn't address it. But it's the same double standard. The OP was approved as a moderator, therefore it's the old see, hear no evil from those who appointed...or anointed

Ok. I'm not asking for a peta party. Must remember, the moral majority is neither and sarcasm is a no no.

Yeah I know, and I said I didn't like how he worded it, but people deal with these things how they are able. Sometimes it's just very different than how we would.

Good grief, grow up. Two moderators commented negatively on the OP's tone, are we expected to be unanimous in our criticism? I just commented that I did not find your joke funny, not because it was directed at a mod, but because it was such an obvious jab. Try to be clever if you're trying to be clever.

Yeah, he was chasing a truck down my driveway and slipped on a patch of ice. He fell hard and awkwardly, and was just too old to recover.

Quote:I'd try to give the dog away first before condemning it.. Might be a little difficult because not a lot of people want older animals, but worth a try.

The deed is done so to speak. I thought of the vet route, but it turns out they charge a whole lot of money that I don't have.

At any rate, nobody was about to take her. Besides all of her issues related to old age, she had this nasty, smelly skin rash where there was no hair anywhere near her butt. It's so bad that it would be rude of me to even ask anyone else to take her.

You're probably onto something in that my wording may have been a defense mechanism for dealing with the issue. Then again, I kind of feel like using phrases such as "put her down" only sugarcoats what I did.

The latter part of your post reminds me of what my Russian friends at work were telling me. They said they'd save the $125 that I gave the animal shelter and would just shoot the dog.

Patches was sedentary simply because she was so old. If we didn't see her, typically she was in her bed sleeping. Otherwise we'd see her sleeping near us. Literally the only time she wasn't sleeping was when she had to go outside to do her business or when she was hungry other thirsty...or when she was scratching and eating herself (she'd bite at her hair/skin). She couldn't even jump up on the bed or anything else, she walked with a profound limp, and more recently she had become practically deaf.

So sad to hear. So what did you decide to do?

I sort of hinted it at it above, but I took her to the local animal shelter. I had to pay $125 and they gave me a little bit of time in room with her to say good-bye. They don't let you be there when they do it. At a vet, the cost is similar, however, you have to either take the body or have them deliver it for cremation at an additional $400 cost. So it's more about what to do with the body that forced the decision.

I commend you for doing the right thing. While it is a shame that you couldn't be there when your dog was put down, at least she was put down humanely. As someone who has been there and done it, I can say that they don't feel any pain. If your dog was in that bad of shape, putting her down was the right thing to do. Many people put off doing it for selfish reasons and the animal ends up suffering longer than it should. At least take some comfort in knowing that she isn't in any pain anymore.

My condolences to you and your family.

I'd say you chose the best option.  Either way, I'm sure it was a tough time.  My dog is 8 and thankfully doing pretty well.  I dread the day you are talking about.

Yeah, Russian. They even mentioned a famous Russian saying about shooting your dog when its time.
