I'm moving at the end of the month and can't bring my dog with me. She's ready to go anyways as she's so old she only wakes up to poop and eat. To keep this simple, I need to kill my dog. Suggestions?

The answer is easy. Take the dog to the vet, and have it put down humanely. Also, be there for comfort when it happens. Don't just drop the dog and go.

Do all, or most, animal hospitals offer such a service? I thought you had to take them to the pound to get this done, but several years back when I took my epileptic cat there, they said I couldn't come with them.


 

I thought for sure I'd see some creative suggestions when I came back to read this.

Most any Vet does it. It is more rare to find one who doesn't. Most will allow you to be there as well. Some will even come to your home to do it. I assume that would be significantly more expensive though.

I did see a list somewhere of vets that will go to your house, but then I'd still have to take care of the body. I'm certainly not going to bury it in the backyard before we move. Even in the case of going to a vet I'm wondering about this. I know at the animal shelter (pound) they take the animal away and that's it, plus it's only like $50. I can only guess what a vet would charge, and we're having to save so much just to make this move due to all the fees, security deposits, etc.


 

This reminds me of a recent story...


 

This teenage girl was pet sitting when the rottweiler she was taking care of passed away. The owners said it was old and expected as much to happen at any time. I forget where she was intending to take the dog, but to get there she opted to put the corpse in a large suitcase where she proceeded to toward a commuter train. When the train arrived at the platform, she was struggling to pick it up and asked for some help. This guy thought it was a perfect opportunity to snatch her suitcase and proceeded to pick it up and run off with it. Needless to say she was at that point relieved of her responsibility for the dog, but I can only imagine the look on the guy's face when he discovered what his prize was.

My biggest concern in all this is our cat who we are bringing with us. The thing is, the cat is absolutely in love with the dog and practically suspects the dog is his mom as they are both black and white. The two often sleep together. I know the cat will grieve the loss, but I fear what it might do as far as possibly taking off to look for the dog. It's an outside cat, and there's no changing that.

Yeah, if she's not TOO old, it might be better to give her to someone who can take her in.  At least if she's not sick.  We got most of our pets from people who couldn't keep theirs.  Though admittedly most of them weren't very old.

Simply write an ad on craigslist advertising free dog.  Make certain to write the ad with the same careless disdain for life and someone in Portland will take the animal off of your hands.

 

In essence, simply pawn your responsibility on to someone else.....I'm betting you are well experienced in that practice.

That's pretty harsh. He said the dog is old and not long for this world. It would probably be best if the dog were put down. The stress of a move might do it in. I may not agree with how he put his request but I get why he's thinking about it.

I think it's all about how you say something. "Canine slaying" and "kill my dog" doesn't really scream I'm worried about my beloved furry friend...

Yeah, his first couple posts did come off a bit harsh.

 

If it were my dog I would either bring it with me, find someone to take care of him until he passes, or take him to the vet to put him down and be there for him until the end of it.  Since your dog I'm assuming he's been with you for quite some time....dont you want to be there for her/him during its last moments?

I just lost my dog to a freak accident. He suffered, and had I known for sure he was going to die I would have euthanized him to save him from three days of agony.

 

Most vets will euthanize your pet. Around here they will do it for the cost of an office visit, as well as dispose of the remains via cremation, if you so desire.

 

10 years is old, but not ancient. My dog was 15, very old for any breed, especially a White German Shepherd. He slept a lot, but was outside roaming a lot, too. 02, is your dog sedentary by choice or circumstance?
