Marcedes Lewis to be traded?

Marcedes Lewis has been overly criticized by this fan base. He has been a Jaguar for a decade now, and no matter what any body thinks, he's been a hell of a TE in the league. Most players could only dream to have a career like he has. I think he was used for the better part of his career as Fred Taylor and then Maurice Jones Drew's blocker, but the guy can catch, I don't care what anyone says. He's made some baller catches even last year. He's a been one of the best all around TE in the league. Not necessarily a Gronk or Jimmy Grahm, but just as an overall TE, he's been a top player at his position.

I think the team has been loyal with Marcedes and has rewarded him with two contracts, maybe he is realizing and returning the favor. He wants to stay here, he wants to play with Julius and see this team progress.

Hope Lewis and Thomas create a great tandem this season.

I look at this move as a possible trade bait for another team. One of the biggest reason why teams wouldn't trade for Lewis other than he's absolutely horrible is his even worse contract.

This might open up some trade options. Hopefully.

Quote:One thought on Lewis' re-structuring his deal is that it could make him more attractive on the trade market (for a Day 3 draft pick), but the source said this means he will likely remain with the Jaguars this year despite the addition of Julius Thomas.

If we trade him, that's fine. If he stays at his new cap number, that's fine as well.

Ryan O posted a brief blog about this and I'll try and post a link here in a minute.  A trade was mentioned but it sounds like the original source indicated this likely meant more that Marcedes is going to be a Jaguar this year as TE2 with Thomas.

<p class="" style="color:rgb(41,47,51);font-family:'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;">Thinkin' out loud. Let's say a young TE emerges in early part of season, <a class="" href='https://twitter.com/hashtag/Jaguars?src=hash'>#Jaguars</a> could flip Lewis (FA in 2016) like they did Monroe

I don't really like that idea. Marcedes will just take up space on the field and will take away opportunities from Robinson and Julius.

Any guesses on what his new salary is going to be?

I'm guessing we halved it.

Lewis as a 2nd tight end is probably the best overall TE in the league.

It's a good player to have. If he gets hurt like he has in the past, no big deal since he's not the #1 TE anyway.

Doubt it. He's going to be a backup.

<p class="" style="color:rgb(41,47,51);font-family:'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;"><a class="" href='https://twitter.com/hashtag/Jaguars?src=hash'>#Jaguars</a> had TE Marcedes Lewis on the trade block. No more. He’s redone his contract & isn’t going anywhere. Lewis & Julius Thomas… Not bad

How does he take away opportunities from ARob or Julius? They can't all three be on the field? Marcedes isn't going to be the first look in a play involving those three, very often.

He's a good TE2, one of the better in the league.  The main issue was his cap number (which was overblown my many here IMO) and now they seemed to have lowered that.

Win/win deal to me.

Agreed. Thomas is going to be the primary TE and Lewis will now be a red zone/short yardage TE, which is where his skill set fits. They aren't benching Robinson or Thomas in favor of Lewis.

Balls that could be going to Robinson Lee Julius even Hurns could potentially go to Macedes is not ideal.

The main issue was that he is horrible.

Good couple of days. We sign a quality O-Lineman in Wisniewski and restructure Lewis to reduce his ridiculous cap number and maybe entice somebody to trade for him, as well as extending Poz to reduce his cap hit. Not bad.

Exactly.

Thomas will be used more as a WR than a true TE I suspect.  He's not coming here to put his hand in the dirt and do the dirty work.  He's a pass catcher and his primary job is going to be to make plays in the passing game.  I see them moving him around the field to create mismatches against defenders.

They're really two different players at the position and should be used that way.

Lewis isn't going to have a major role in the passing game anymore and that's the way it should be.  As you said, his skill set fits a certain style of play and we should be able to focus him more in that role with Thomas being added.

Restructured? Which means they paid him most of his salary already? Which means a less cap hit?

Someone explain this to me....
