Marcedes Lewis to be traded?

Quote:Would he have gotten nothing? Probably not. But more than what the Jaguars would have paid him? Probably not either. The team and Lewis probably agreed into something that works out for both of them; more than what Lewis would have gotten in the market had the Jags cut him out right but less than what his current contract guarantees.

And uh..if they changed the language of his contract to change a guarantee to incentive, then yeah, he took a pay cut.

Given that the team have zero need for additional cap space (we were at what? $30M after the Wiesnewski signing?), and there was not an extension involved, then yeah, I think it's a perfectly reasonable assumption that the purpose of this restructuring was to lower Lewis' salary this season.
I'm confident that when the details of this restructure come out, people are going to be sorely disappointed to discover that there probably isn't really a pay cut associated with it. As I stated before, the more likely scenario is that they've changed the structure to incorporate more incentives, and I'm not even sure they'll be the kind that are unlikely to be earned. That creates some additional cap room this year, but if he hits his targets, that money gets added back in. This team isn't in need of more cap room.

Uh, if they changed the language to incentivize the contract, depending on what they put in there, the potential exists for him to make as much, if not more. We'll see soon enough.

Marcedes Lewis was making $6.8M in 2015 before cutting salary to $2.65M. He can earn a max of $3M through not likely playtime incentives.

Marcedes Lewis' $2.65M salary is: $250k signing bonus, $2M base salary ($500k GTD for skill & salary cap) & $400k per game roster bonus.

The Jags pick up $4.4M of cap room from Marcedes Lewis' pay cut. His 2015 cap number was $8.2M. It's now $3.85M.

Looks like a severe straight pay cut to me based on what I posted above.

Definitely think this makes him more enticing trade bait but also definitely worth keeping at that price too.

Yep, agreed with both parts.

Confidence is a funny thing, ain't it?

At that salary, Lewis is a keeper.

Jaguars are gonna regret this move bad! Lewis will have a great year then go to another team next year to get his ring since the jaguars were dumb to let him not get paid.

Yep. That's a no frills, straight up pay cut.

The paycut makes the retention of Lewis much more appealing.

I will gladly take him as our #2 TE for that price on the team. If Caldwell feels springy and gets a trade for him with the new price--great. Otherwise, pretty good work by the front office keeping his numbers more in line for this season.

That's not true at all. I simply didn't want to make an assumption. Pardon me for wanting details before declaring anything. How dare I want facts!

I'd still like to see the actual details here to find out whether that pay cut is just a cut in the base and the deal is chalked full of incentives.

People like to make assumptions like they know what is going on behind the scenes. It seems to me like he took a pay cut to STAY with the Jaguars. People get way to bent over trades and trading down. If the value is there, they would hear offers. But making the position WORSE when you have GREAT depth at the moment is silly when Lewis in reality would only garner maybe a 7th. Lewis is still a very productive player in this league. His naysayers really hate him, but he's had a hell of a NFL career.

I hope he stays and makes a great tandem with Julius Thomas.

You are right a player as good as Lewis it mean he probly will get more money at the end.

That sounds like an assumption to me. Based on the way you were debating just about everyone in this thread, you'd think you actually had solid info using words like "I'm confident" and "people are going to be sorely disappointed" and "more likely scenario"

We were right, you were wrong. It happens. Just admit it and take your lumps instead of trying to back track and pretend as if you weren't making your own assumptions.

League source says #Jaguars TE Marcedes Lewis has re-structured final year of his contract. No extension. Likely means Lewis staying put.

I am sure no team was going to take him with his current contract. It was a smart move by GM Dave Caldwell.
