Quote:I like a good guitar solo. However, my appreciation of the blues has taught me that a good blues guitarist can put these white boys to shame. You mean like SRV? We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!

Quote:You mean like SRV? I was just getting ready to post a followup on my thoughts. While there are many white guitar players who attempt to emulate the blues, none can really achieve it. Eric Clapton can feel it some what, but he's obviously not the real thing. Skinny, white British boys just can't feel it. The closest a white guy has ever come to sounding real is SRV. But yes, he was only close. When it comes to the purity, soulfulness, and improvisation of the note, even SRV couldn't achieve the true blues. I love SRV and have a pretty good collection of his music, but he wasn't pure. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!

While he isn't classic blues along the lines of Hooker, Waters, or King, he does a great job playing the guitar. To my ears at least.
I'm trying to make myself more informed and less opinionated.
Stop saying whatever stupid thing you're talking about and pay attention to all the interesting things I have to say!

I've heard that line of thinking many times so I know you're not alone in it, but I think I'll just have to disagree with that my man.

I think he's referring to Robert Johnson, Howlin' Wolf and the like. Maybe Curtis Loew. :teehee:
The things this guy here can do with a guitar are simply unreal....
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FNt2HwiaXZ8 And that isn't even remotely one of his really "Wow" songs. He has some seriously awesome songs. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nPGA3vjMLgE Paul Gilbert is another one of my favorites, hes an extremely intelligent and talented musician. Most music I listen to nowadays is just instrumental because there is a serious lack of vocal talent out there in the Rock/Metal universe.

Quote:Paul Gilbert is another one of my favorites, hes an extremely intelligent and talented musician. In my college days, I played in a local band with a guitar player who LOVED Paul Gilbert and could do things in a very similar style. I could seriously sit and watch my friend play for hours, although he made me want to smash my own guitar at times haha.

Quote: So black blues players=pure and white blues players=not pure? I've listened closely over the years and it's the only conclusion I can arrive at. Quote:In my college days, I played in a local band with a guitar player who LOVED Paul Gilbert and could do things in a very similar style. He actually has Paul's signature guitar. ![]() And my friend was taught guitar by a guy by the name of Tony Smotherman, hes pretty much from around here. I've been able to see Tony live and actually hang out with him a few times and he is a really awesome guy. He actually got to write in the Guitar World's 'Betcha Can't Play This' section for a few of their issues. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=shYpa9v9tSw He plays around Jacksonville all the time, and I actually had the pleasure of sitting in my friends room while this guy was 4 feet from me shredding the hell out of my friends new guitar. That video there was filmed at Latitude 30 over at the Avenues I'm pretty sure.

Quote:Its also too bad that black youth of today (and white youth too, for that matter) really don't appreciate some of the legendary black musicians as Hendrix or the or the classic Blues players....they'd rather instead look up to the little talent gangsta thug druggie rap stars instead.Well there is this guy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mc5enXwfFwo Nice solo at 2:30 and real nice one at 4:50 We show less advertisements to registered users. Sounds like a Yngwie Malmsteen imitator. Just like Joe Satriani, all that virtuoso stuff is technically impressive but, musically, starts to sound monotonous and machine-like after a while. Quote:Edit: Forgot "Stone in Love" by Journey. If you love "Don't Stop Believing", check this one out. Schon is completely underrated.Good one, but I would take the end solo of "Who's Crying Now" over that one. It may not be complex, but it has a life. It's something that words can't describe. It's just when something is "Right" Sort of like the Saxophone solo from Foreigner, "Urgent" It just has "It"
