Drafting if we fall out the first 5

Quote:So yeah, lets draft another QB without any kind of protection and watch him flop around on the ground like a fish when he gets hammered.. Jeanyus..
our problem is the interior line not the tackles, Bradfield and Pastor has been decent and they are backups, we can draft some OL in the middle of the draft and sign free agents on the line. We already went throw this crap of draft and so called RT in the top 5 and it was all a shame Jockel was never gonna play RT.

Under your rationale, you'd have taken Tony Mandarich over Troy Aikman in 89 because Dallas' OL was horrid then and they couldn't protect him, either.

Heck, the Steelers have almost never been able to protect Roethlisberger and they still went to three Super Bowls with him.

Get the QB.  It's the most important piece...and it's the hardest piece to find.

We already have a good young LT prospect on the roster.  RT is decent.  If we feel we need an upgrade, get it later.  The interior three need upgrading, and they can always be available later.

I would take Mack, dudes going to be a beast.
Yep, and yes Mack is a beast. Dennard is a monster too though and his specialty is physical press coverage. He would be a perfect fit across from Gratz. The secondary would be so much blam.

EDIT: I also think Bortles is a legit franchise QB prospect but I think it's like 25% chance at best he declares.

The 9ers have 3 first round picks on their offensive line.

Well it all depends on who is there. If we're saying 5, I'm assuming that: Teddy, Clowney, Barr, and Matthews are gone.

Three Options:

Take best available QB.

Take best available LEO (most likely Mack)

Trade down.

They also have playmakers all over the place at the skill positions.

RT - Alex Boone (UDFA 2009) 49ers

RG - Anthony Davis (1st round pick) Drafted to play LT but didn't work out at Lt and RT now he's playing RG

C - Jonathan Goodwin C (5th RD 2002) NY Jets

LG - Joe Looney (4th round pick)

LT - Joe Staley (1st round pick)

Where's the 3rd 1st rounder? And they only spent 2 1st rounders because Davis didn't work out at LT, they didn't draft David to play Guard in the 1st.

Mike Iupati was a first rounder and their usual starter at left guard.

But but but, the Texans have THREE PROBOWLERS on their Oline!!!  They're SUPER GOOD AWESOME!!!  They're the best 2-9 team EVER!!!

I, for one, don't want another Oline pick in the top 5.  Worked out soooo well for us this year (please see the sarcasm).  Joeckle is hurt, Monroe is gone and doing extremely well in Baltimore since the trade, and Bradfield/Paztor haven't been horrible.

The strangest thing about the draft talk to me is that some people seem to think you can either upgrade the OL OR the QB position. With comments along the lines of "why draft a QB with no line to protect him?"

We have 10 picks in this draft and FA still to come its possible to draft a QB and get some help on the OL.

Quote:Russell and Curry were both "sure things" in their respective draft.

Curry was often billed as the safest pick in the draft with ability to play all 3 LB spots and a future pro bowler wherever he played.

Russell was supposed to be one of the top QBs in the league within the first couple years of being drafted. Supposed great leader to go along with his obvious physical tools.

These players like Bridgewater were labeled as a sure fire success in the NFL. There are no sure things in the draft.

Curry was viewed as a safe pick.

But Jamarcus?!?!?!  HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

That's a good one. Thanks.

I know lots of people had doubts about Russell going into that draft.

I was one of them.

Kiper and Al Davis became enamored with his arm strength and height.

Russell was probably the most criticized No. 1 selection in recent NFL history. Not sure what that guy is talking about. Kiper comparing him to Elway doesn't mean that pick wasn't met with a ton of skepticism.

Oh man, this post's logic was so controversial two months ago. Would've resulted in a twenty-page debate.

Yeah.

Pazstor is coming along okay.

Joeckel returns

We replace the last Coughlin player in FA

3rd Round pick

Maybe even another Free Agent

and our O-line already starts to look better.

I was wrong about Trent Baalke.

if Barr is gone trade back or take Mack

Davis plays RT and Boone plays RG.  Davis was never drafted to be their LT, he was drafted 3 years after Staley.

Wouldn't like to see another OT this soon.  In a couple years, in the middle/back of the first round wouldn't make me mad, though, depending on who else were to be there.

If we are out of the Bridgewater running, I believe it's Carr or trade down. I'm hoping for Carr if we don't get Teddy. A lot of people shy away from him due to family history but Peyton Manning, Brady, or any possible HoF qb would have failed in that situation. We have the tackles to keep little bro upright, and we can spend a second on a dt/leo and third on the interior line.

As the team improves, their draft pick position will only get worst in the future drafts. This team is in dire need of a QB. I would rather have the second or third ranked QB in this draft, then wait until the 2nd or 3rd round and get something equivalent to the 7th ranked QB in the draft. Assuming the Jags are not picking until the 5th or 6th selection, I would like to see a slight trade down for additional picks only if Caldwell determines he can still get the next best QB. QB is the most critical position on a football team, and if you don't have one...you get one. If the QB selected does not work out this year, you draft another one next year.
