I'm not trying to defend this coaching staff but it's not like we have the personnel to "coach up", if you can't rush the passer it doesn't matter what the rest of your defense looks like. Not only can we not rush the passer, but our linebackers (other than Telvin) and most of our secondary is slow, we currently don't have the athleticism or talent to "coach up"

Coaching up means you make players better. No matter how bad or good they are. Gratz, Colvin, Cyp, Branch, McCray..... No one is getting better. They have pretty much been the same. Telvin is literally the only defensive player drafted who has gotten better since they came in.

 

And I really like Colvin. I think he can be really good.

I think Colvin has improved, but other than that, you're right. McCray and Gratz declined hard, which is why Ramsey and VH are even in this discussion.

This is hard. I'm watching Hargreaves talk with Bucky and his combine stuff, I like him a lot. Could he play FS? If so, I'm almost leaning towards him now too lol Man, we have some good choices at #5 this year guys/gals!!

 Yea but has it ever occurred to you that maybe those guys (other than Colvin) aren't very good? The Jags simply don't have the requisite talent on defense to be a top 15 or so unit. How many of our guys what start for a team like the Texans? Who are themselves just an above average defense

Too bad that doesn't even matter as much for DBs. The 3 cone is way more important, even for DEs. And Bosa had a good combine. You would think people would have learned by now not to overrate the 40.

Bosa did have a good combine. Not great, not terrible, just solid. Ramsey is having a great combine showing off elite physical traits. And that's not including just the 40 for the player's in question.

The top tier for us going into the combine should have always been Ramsey, Bosa, and Jack...and the combine did nothing but reinforce that with all 3.

I'm all in for Jack and Hargreaves if we use him as FS; not sure I'm sold on him being a lock down CB. But after today, I don't doubt he could do it.

He has Patrick Peterson measureables, but he doesn't have the suddenness, ball skills, awareness, or stats like an elite defensive back. The reason? He is an elite athlete with some football skills, not an elite football player.
