Im perfectly fine with them not signing Vernon. I couldnt see them signing Vernon to the contract right after Malik Jackson

The guy had what, 8 sacks last year? That's not quite "let's give the guy the key to Jacksonville" digits. What if they paid him more than the Giants are about to, and he comes in and tears an ACL during training camp? Has an off season and has 5 sacks? Pulls a Clemons and just vanishes? This was astronomically high for a DE of his level, which isn't the best in the NFL. I'd offer that to Watt, but after that .....

Always keep in mind that blockbusting, game changing, championship bringing FA's don't actually exist except for the rare occasion when it's a QB wrapping up his career, and even that doesn't work sometimes.

You're Welcome.

Quote:So what? Who else you plan on spending the money on? Either you draft an unproven NFL pass rusher or you buy one. What's hard about this. Sure he might have cost us a cap hit of 18-20 million over 5 years but so what? You have a young ascending player who can play a position of need
Bortles becomes eligible to sign an extension before the deadline to use the cap space for 2016. Whatever cap space we don't use in free agency, we can use towards the guaranteed money for his extension putting a huge dent in his cap hit over the life of the contract. This will help make sure we have enough cap space to stay a major player in future free agencies.

Pretty clear even early in the article he didn't really want to be here. Glad Dave wasn't sucked into that mess of a contract. What a joke, Vernon may be a good pass rusher, but not for the initial price tag in h is new contract. No. Way.

As suspected, NYC is sexier than JAX.

The five year deal allows him another shot at big payday.

His agent was a prime mover in this.

His tax hit is a good ways beyond 6 million.

Lack of fiduciary responsibility on his agents part, but he is paid first and lives in Davie, FL.

He will have NY  Burroughs, Local, City and State tax to contend with.

The pleasure of playing in the Medowlands is that he will have Rutherford, Bergen County and NJ state taxes.

This is a tough loss, and many fans cry "CHEAP" and "pay da man"

You don't mortage your future on one player, unless he is the QB.

Yeah, I am a little bummed out, but the sun came up today and in light of the dealings, Dave did right.

And we signed Tashaun Gipson!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

After reading that article, thank god we didn't go all in. Makes me respect Dave that much more for not going all " jones or Snyder" and having his limits!

After a day of reflection, I am thinking I'm glad we didn't blow that amount of money on that player.   Save the money, take a run at someone else.   It might be next year.   We still have the money.   You have to be disciplined.

Yep. It's a marathon, not a sprint.

I respect Caldwell more for not signing Vernon.. It shows hes not desperate for unproven talent... We got Jackson lets see what the draft can bring in as well...We also cant forget the second wave of Free Agency as well.

It was more Vernon' s choice than our inability to go there. He can never live up to the contract he got, but good for him for getting that pay day. And now.. he's dead to me. Next free agent up!
Only a chump boos the home team!

I can't believe people refuse to see that it's just an obscene amount of guaranteed money.  That's ridiculous.  You're saddled with a $50+million debt whether the guy sucks or not.  For some guy that almost certainly is not worth THAT kind of money...just because it's a weak FA for pass rushers.  I give Caldwell credit for backing off of that foolishness.

Screw him.
