Look at the contract the Giants offered. I wanted him to but there's a limit to it, not to mention we got young players with contracts expiring the next few years. Vernon got PAID

If we were going to pay him same money that Giants did, I'm glad we let him walk.  People seem to forget that Bortles, Robinson, Hurns, Smith won't play out rest of their career on rookie salary ; )

I'm never one to complain about spending cause it's not my money. But nooooo way is this a good deal to make for us, that's wayyy to much money not only for us to gamble on a player (valued higher than Watt) but also impacting our future signings to keep our young guys.

Limits have to be in place. It shows incredible discipline on Caldwell's part IMO. Way to much money.

Just to play devils advocate, Vernon got 17 million per year, Malik got 15 million per year...  What's the big deal between 2 million dollars?

Or is it that because we signed Jackson to a high end long term deal, it made Vernon's deal high end long term deal un-doable when looking at our younger players?

So what? Who else you plan on spending the money on? Either you draft an unproven NFL pass rusher or you buy one. What's hard about this. Sure he might have cost us a cap hit of 18-20 million over 5 years but so what? You have a young ascending player who can play a position of need

Probably this plus they have gone in on Fowler at Leo. Vernon leaves Fowler at a bit of a loose end.

I've always thought Olivier is a bit overrated considering he's had less than 8 sacks in each of the past two seasons.

It's the guaranteed money of both that amounts to a unacceptable debt. They also overpaid for Malik IMO.

Vernon was not worth it, IMO.  Time will tell.

Sign The Windmill to a cheap contract, draft a DE in the top 3 rounds, and with Fowler, Jr. healthy we should be fine.  Lots of pressure coming from the interior DL too.

I trust Dave, but yeah, 15 million for 6 years is pretty hefty...  Hopefully he has a quick start to his Jaguar career, otherwise it could be a long season of Jungle snipers freaking out over that signing.

As long as Marks is Healthy, and Fowler really comes on strong, our D-Line should be much improved, that's for sure!  The addition of Jackson helps so long as we have all the other pieces playing well.

It makes the fact that we didn't sign this Vernon guy a little less of a big deal to me.

Where have you been _Aman?

I survived the Gus Bradley Error.

I have no issue with us walking away. That contract coupled with Jackson's would be entirelying too much tied up in one position group. We still have a lot of young talent to tie up over the next few years. The addition of Jackson plus return of Dante and Marks should mean an improved defense next year plus there's still the draft.

52 million guaranteed for Vernon. Just to much. I know we have the space but damn, it's just too freaking much.

I think Malik is only the third highest paid DT, while Vernon I think is the highest paid DE.

I was wrong about Trent Baalke.

Just got super busy!  I was out on FMLA for 2 months when I tore my Achilles, so once the new year started, I had a bunch of stuff to get caught up on!  But things are good in New Mexico.

You've been holding down the Jungle, I see....
