Who has cut the cord?

Quote:I will add that I think subscription apps are the way all video content will be delivered and consumed in the future.  Might as well go ahead and get on board with it now and save money at the same time.

I agree, and hope you are right about subscription apps being the way of the future, but if everything is truly al a carte, how does a channel determine it's worth? I.e, if FX were by itself, is it $5 a month? $7? What about Disney Channel? TNT, TBS? If the majority of these channels don't stay bundled, It could add up pretty fast and put you back where you were with a the cable/satellite companies.

Quote:Awesome. Thanks a lot. One more question. How did you arrive at the Tablo as a DVR choice? I saw a couple options like Tivo and Channel Master, but they all seem to be compatible with different streaming services. Can you actually schedule and record content from the streaming services they are compatible with or does it only work with the antenna?

Tablo is just for over the air antennae content.  I'm not sure why you'd need a DVR except for live major network sports and to avoid paying CBS $6 per month for their content as most of the other stuff is available next day on Hulu.  The Tablo is a whole house DVR for local content.  Their guide subscription is $5 per month or $150 lifetime as I mentioned before.  You can stream content from your Tablo to any mobile device while on the go as well.  I remember looking at Tivo and Channel Master and there was something missing from each or they charged a lot more.  I can't remember the specifics about them now, perhaps they've changed their offerings.  Tablo was the clear way to go when I took everything into consideration.  I don't think the other two are whole house DVRs for instance or if they are they are much more expensive to make that happen.

Original content.  That's why Hulu, Netflix and Amazon Prime are producing their own shows.  I think there may still be channel packages of channels that can't survive on their own.

What about internet?  They clearly have the best offering as far as that's concerned until Google Fiber becomes available.

I wanna keep it, but damn, another $10 a month increase is just too much. My bill's gone from $70 to $185 over the last 6 years and I only added one service.

As far as Comcast is concerned, I know how frustrating they can be.  Before I committed to cutting the cord, I called them about consolidating my internet and Cable in the hopes of lowering my monthly bill by dumping DirecTV.  I logged into my Comcast account online and started shopping for cable plans.  I found one that was acceptable only to call in to get set up and be told that the plan I found wasn't available in my area.  Excuse me, I was logged into my account!  Why would I be shown plans not available to me?  Talk about bait and switch...  I was done with them aside from internet until they called with the $5 upgrade.

Quick question: How much do you actually get for that $185?

Unfortunately, the telecommunications industry is filled with terrible customer service all the way around and shady practices, it's not just Uverse and Comcast.  DirecTV does tend to be a bit better in that regard, however, I asked DirecTV several times to stop calling me about adding on a package of worthless channels for an extra $5 per month and they would never stop calling.

You don't need any special boxes from the provider like the woman in the Comcast link is complaining about.  You just log into the Apps of the channels you watch with the proper credentials through your AppleTV, Roku or equivalent.  It streams in HD so there is no need to pay the extra HD charge they like to add on either.  Any cost involved in obtaining an AppleTV, Roku or etc will ultimately pay for itself within a year if not within a few months even if you're just opting out of renting a provider's equipment and paying their HD content premium.  Many of the channel Apps have a "Live" option that lets you stream the channel live just like you would watch it live on Satellite or Cable as long as you have a valid subscription to that channel.  The sacrifice is giving up the convenience of having an easy to use channel guide.  It's well worth it in my opinion as I think they will eventually get the channel guide thing figured out.  Some apps that have multiple obscure streaming channels bundled already have an internal channel guide for those channels and the Tablo I use for local channels has it's own guide as well.

240 HD channels with all the On Demand stuff and 75 Mbps.

That's a pretty solid package. Not sure if it's worth $185/month though.

I just feel like I'm paying all that extra because I want the pro sports networks (NFL, MLB, and NHL mostly) and Disney Junior for my kids. Most of the other channels are a waste.

That's the only way cable companies know how to operate. Over here if I want to watch Formula 1 live, I have to buy the sports package at €15/month. That also includes golf, soccer and a shared channel for tennis, rugby, etc. None of those other sports I want to pay for and I don't want to pay €15/month just for F1.

Quote:My setup involves subscriptions to Hulu ($8/month), Netflix ($8/month), Amazon Prime ($100/year) and HBO Now ($15/month).  I cut the cord with DirecTV almost a year ago.  I of course had to keep my Comcast High Speed Internet at $65 per month.  I have a single antennae for local channels and I have it hooked up to a Tablo DVR system which is connected to my router.  I can pull up the Tablo from any TV with a Roku or Apple TV attached to it and watch live TV or recorded shows from the local stations.  The Tablo eliminates the need for an antennae being hooked up to each TV.  The Tablo isn't all that necessary if you have a Hulu subscription, however, I can record live sports like Jaguar games and we don't have to pay CBS for their streamable content which they don't like to share unless you buy a subscription to their app as well.  My wife uses the Tablo more than I do, I just personally use it for the live sports.

This guy knows what's up!

So Hulu will take care of sports? I didn't know they did that.

It appears you fell for the cheap Chinese knock-off. AppleTV is much better.

LOL, I don't think the initial post that bunnie put up is referring much to what you posted up, it was more about what I posted.  I posted that I "can" watch stuff that is illegally hosted and/or shared on the internet if I wanted to and described the legally available hardware that I use along with the openly available legal and free software that I use.  I also pointed out in my post that I personally don't do it and raised the question of legality vs. ethical.

Me personally, I don't do what probably 90% of people on this board do.  I don't use pirated software, I don't download mp3 music that is not free and I don't download pirated video content.  While yes all of that is easy to do, it also opens up a major flaw.

The fact of the matter is, it's all there and pretty easily accessible if one does just a little bit of research.  Discussing the use of a proxy or VPN isn't really "promoting" anything illegal just like describing available commercial off-the-shelf hardware and/or freely available open source software.  It's all about how you use it.
