Because taking a 2x4 to the face at 60 mph has the same effect regardless of whether you have 1 dollar or 1 million dollars.

Hunker Down game is a game played at hurricane parties. You watch the weather report and everytime the weatherman or news guy says "hunker down" you take a shot. By the time the electricity is out, you don't even care any more.

During Hurricane Ike, i got so smashed playing Hunker Down that I missed the storm!

23 people died "hunkering down" in the face of a mean [BAD WORD REMOVED] named Camille.

Quality is not the word I'd use to describe most Floridian homes.

Quote:It basically means sticking to a decision despite any pressure to change, even to one's detriment. Google told me it was originally used to describe escaped convicts hiding in caves, refusing to surrender.

It's primarily used for one of two things... 1. for a convict to prepare to make his stand .... 2. for someone to prepare shelter to ride out a potentially catastrophic weather situation.

I suppose you could also use it to prepare a bomb shelter for a nuclear strike. You may need ot hunker down for several months until the radiation clears.

I'm also picturing front line soldiers hunkering down in their bunkers, and am thinking this may relate to its origin.

The point being that the odds of being hit in the face with a 2x4 between here and Haiti is vastly different. I've lived in a third world country when typhoons came through. The greatest danger was being struck by corrugated metal sheeting ripped from the roofs of houses. Again, we don't face that danger so much here.

You're obviously not familiar with the building code standard improvements brought about by hurricane Andrew.

As others have stated, I've used the term as long as I can remember but never really thought about what it really means.

Also, poorly constructed houses on hillsides and near waterways.

ive got the jax beach pier cam going here at work. im surprised its still on. the water hasnt risen to the level of the dunes but it does look like its starting to crash right in front and wash up over them. And im sure the channels being the dunes are having water flush through.

I thought htey were saying the storm surge would be at it's worst around 2-3pm as the tide would be at its highest and the onshore wind would be at its strongest.

been hearing the same thing about st augustine. that its flooded. i saw a video on twitter of a family trapped at a bed and breakfast. water was running down the streets... couldnt tell how deep but probably close to knee high. video was posted an hour ago. sure it is worse now.

Trapped in a bed and breakfast? They had ample time to leave. If those morons volunteered to stay in the direct line of a storm surge, then they simply aren't bright. Probably didn't want to lose his deposit.

20 people, including children, stuck in #StAugustine bed & breakfast. They say they're getting worried, as the surge is about to come in.
