The Walking Dead, Season 7 (spoilers)

Quote:i can't figure out who I want to kill Negan, or who is the most likely, when it happens. While Rick or Maggie would get the most satisfaction, Carl is my darkhorse.

I imagine the graphic novel readers will have a better idea, but please don't tell me.
As long as it's not Dwight I don't care who does it.

I love that Carl isn't afraid of him. He only backed down when Negan threatened to get serious. Carl may be a little crazy but he's not stupid. And by crazy I mean in a way that a kid growing up in that world would have to be.

You guys should really read the novels.

I read the first chapter and really liked it, my problem is I hate lugging books around, and I understand the compendiums are pretty thick. I tried on my Kindle but the font is too small for comfortable reading. Still, I'm going to give it a shot.

Episodes like this reaffirm my beliefs that this show only needs 10-12 episodes, just an awful episode all around imo.  The dialog was terrible, the plot and characters were stupid, the only saving grace was Maggie actually looked pretty hot.

Quote:My husband loves him. Thinks he's the best bad guy seen on tv in a long time. I have to agree.
I've not been overly impressed with Negan as the villain. Don't misunderstand, I have enjoyed the actor playing the part and this season is by far the best season since they left the prison. But, I think Negan is just a generic evil guy, there is no depth at all to his character. They just pile on evil thing after evil thing to make him look, really evil. It's almost to a point of just waiting on him to shoot a dog to piss off animal lovers. No rhyme or reason just "Hey, look at that dog...POW!...I shot him and he wasn't even doing anything, what do you think of that?" Eventually, someone is gonna turn on him because he constantly reminds people what a bad person he is, and for no real reason except to make people feel they have to obey. I much more enjoyed "The Governor" as the villain because he was a total character. He was a normal person, he didn't have to go kill your favorite character when you first meet him just to get you to hate him. It seemed he felt like he was doing something right for the people, at least at first. He was a person but he also had the bad side to him, like all of us...

In the comics, Carl made a much larger impression when he met Negan.

I'm going to be honest, I'm kind of in the same boat as you. I love Jeffrey Dean Morgan as an actor but this character is being pushed as being uber evil "just because." This leads me to believe that may not necessarily be the case...with the added caveat that I do not read the graphic novels. After decades of reading comics, manga and fantasy, the one thing that's held true across all these genres is that the truly compelling villains are rarely, if ever wantonly evil in the way Negan is being portrayed currently. Every once in a while a murderhobo villain is good to shake things up, however in this particular setting it isn't all that necessary.

Does this story really benefit from the interjection an unabashed murderhobo? To me, it does not and ultimately why I don't think that's what Negan really is.

Edit: A murderhobo is a RPG nickname for an unethical/unscrupulous character, typically but not always evil, who only exists for no other purpose defeat monsters/enemies and claim loot. He does not have a compelling backstory. He brings nothing to the plot but death, terror and discord for his enemies and he doesn't ultimately care about anyone or anything save himself and his own vices. That sure sounds like Negan as we've seen him so far...

IMO, Negan's introduction was softened by:

1. Melon bash toned down for TV

2. The way the outpost raid was written for the show.

3. Jeffrey Dean Morgan isn't that physical of a presence.

In the comic, I don't recall Rick's raid on the outpost being so brutal - number of kills, taking arsenal, and heads on pikes.  I remember it as being just as taking out a few guys, making Negan's response/introduction with Lucille being a way over the top/intensely brutal response.

Also in the comic, the melon bashing was more graphic.  Glenn struggled more before he went completely down, with Negan mocking him the entire time.

I can appreciate the comments on how Negan is somewhat of a letdown.  He was a physically bigger guy in the comic (adding to the presence,) and shown as more insanely brutal (mildy Joker-like, for a good comparison.)

They nailed the cocky jock theme the comic had, but he's not the oversized physical and mental monster painted more vividly in the comic.

They're doing a great job of making you hate Negan as a viewer.  I wonder if they have a Game of Thrones-esque plan for making you start to like him like what was done with Jaime Lannister.  Although, Jaime never was directly responsible for any fan favorite character deaths.

His predictable yet unpredictable behavior is exactly what makes him so freaky. People who are that unstable are scary as [BLEEP]. I knew a guy once who was pretty darn unstable and he freaked people out all the time. You just never knew when Jekyll or Hyde was showing up. Negan is mostly Hyde but I think in his calmer moments he's Jekyll, but even his Jekyll is unnerving.

I think we don't really feel the real impact of why he's such a bad dude because we haven't seen what he's been up to since stuff hit the fan. When he asks people who they are and their reply is, "Negan," and a guy would rather die than go back, there's some nasty stuff that went down to break them down to that point.

I would love to read the comics but RollerJag said the font is too small on the Kindle, which is what I have, and to pay for that or the books right now is not an expense I can justify.
