Mariota doesn't make mistakes. He has a career 30 TDs in the redzone with 0 INTs. That's why his team is at least competent on offense. 

 

Yeah, that is impressive no doubt.

 

No mistakes in the red zone is huge because you will at least get 3 if not 7 points most of the time you are in there.

My knock on Mariota wasn't ever much that he wasn't a good QB. Just saw him more of a dink and dunker and didn't think his body could hold up.


If his Oline protects him though he's well on his way to proving me wrong.

 

Meanwhile we're clinging to hope that the new coach staff magically makes Bortles a mechanically sound QB in year 4. Or at least magic happens with a 6th round QB in Allen.....

Hell, bring in a vet as long as he's not a relegated clipboard holder. 


We can't allow Indy and TN to take over while we flounder with QB mistake after QB mistake.

Luckily it looks like Houston hogtied themselves with a stupid contract on a mediocre at best QB.

Multiple uncalled PI penalties and drops on perfectly thrown passes will do that.

 

As an aside Mariota almost looks really good. Still haven't seen him show he can come from behind, but the titans have done a great job of front running. Either way he's gotten much better stats than I figured he would.

Lost out on a few dozen yards and even more (potentially) had he got the ball back after those turnovers we didn't get.

I think you're underestimating what he lost on drops. One was to Hurns behind the defense in stride and had the distinct look of a TD.


Either way, though, the reffing all this season has hurt his performance very badly. Letting teams hold and interfere with Robinson with almost no calls for it is probably the biggest problem with the offensive performance this year.

I realize MM is right now clearly better than BB, but it's still fun to look at how all four qbs stack up each week including an interesting competition between MM and Luck for top qb in the division, and if recent trends keep up, between Osweiler and BB for the bottom qb. Osweiler played in a blizzard at Lambeau field, but didn't look like hot garbage as you'd expect...

Blake had a tough game vs the Broncos as virtually all qbs do, although his protection held up better than I thought it would. His pick six did them in. Blake's overall stats have reached unacceptable levels meaning he needs some big games to compensate. If he has a similar bad game vs the VIkings making for three in a row, the Jaguars might want to consider starting Brandon Allen for the last three games.

Its vindicating after being harassed incessantly for being a 'troll' all last season, only to be proven right in the Jags most hyped season. No hard feelings, still hope the Jags can pull the upsets and win against the Colts and Texans.

The weekly graph can be deceiving. For instance the difference between Mariota and Luck looks to be about the same as the difference between Bortles and Osweiler. But there is only 1 QB (Keenum) between Bortles and Osweiler and 5 between Mariota and Luck.
 
Only Fitzpatrick currently has a lower rating than Osweiler.
 
Half the league separates Luck from Bortles.
 
There are only 4 QBs above Mariota: Brady, Ryan, Prescott and Brees.
 
On the Opponent graph each column should be viewed as its own separate graph. Don’t try imagining trend lines across the columns. The purpose of the graph is to directly compare how each passer performed against the same defense.
 
Just going by the Defense Rate markers you can see that the average team defense passer rating this season is around 90. Through Week 13 the actual average defense rate is 90.7 across all NFL teams. 
 
The left side of the graph shows the 1v1, 2v2, 3v3, 4v4 matchups against the AFC North and East teams. 
 
Here you can see Mariota feasted on the Browns who have the worst passing defense in the NFL. 
 
Mariota also played very well against the Dolphins who have a slightly above average rating.
 
Bortles will have faced the toughest AFC North or East passing defense in the Ravens. And of course, Bortles had a poor passing game against those Ravens.
 
Luck has the best rating which came last week against the Jets.
 
The Steelers are not included since Luck sat out that game.
 
The middle portion of the graph is the most useful for comparing the QBs. Here we have the NFC North and AFC West matchups.
 
Mariota really feasts on weaker Ds in the North.
 
Bortles and Osweiler are having terrible horrible no good very bad seasons.
 
Osweiler’s best performance was against the Packers last week so it might look like he’s turned a corner but the Packers have the second worst passing D in the NFL.
 
Luck’s supposed to be a HoF QB? Luck looks like Just Another Guy as his numbers in this portion of the graph seem to average out to just average. Meh.
 
The right side shows the home and away games in the division. I didn’t separate out the home/away defensive rates. The rate shown is over the entire season.
 
The Colts have the worst passing D in the division and its not really close. So maybe Luck is a HoF quality QB?
 
If you only looked at the weekly ratings you might think that Luck is ascending and Bortles went off a cliff last week but really they just happened to play a weak team in the case of Luck and the best defensive passing team in the case of Bortles.
 
The weekly graph shows that Bortles and Osweiler are consistent. The lone outliers are Week 13 for Bortles and Week 12 for Osweiler.
 
Bortles had only two average to above average games one of which was the Titans, a blowout game where Bortles picked up some garbage time points. The Jaguars were actually only blown out in two games, Chargers and Titans.
 
Mariota has had up and down weeks but his down weeks were still average or above since his poor Week 3 and 4 performances.
 
Considering the other 3 QBs did poorly against the Broncos, this week should be a good indicator if Mariota’s passing game is “there”.
 
Mariota is the MVP of the Titans. When he has elite passer ratings the Titans win. Average to below average passing game = loss. This might seem obvious but it doesn’t hold true for Luck.
The Titan’s exotic smashmouth running game may be helping Mariota’s passing numbers but it doesn’t appear to be winning games without Mariota being an efficient passer.
