Thoughts on a good chance of Mike Smith as our new Head Coach!

We haven't fulfilled the Rooney Rule yet though right?  So we have to interview someone else still before we hire anyone?

I thought we interviewed Anthony Lynn.

I was wrong about Trent Baalke.

Weatherspoon and Upshaw are two decent FA possibilities from ATL.

Oh nice, Weatherspoon would be great!

Ah, didn't realize we interviewed him.  Good to know, thanks!

Considering the team hasn't announced any interviews or confirmed any speculated interviews - there is no way of knowing that they haven't interviewed a candidate that fulfills the requirement.

They may have for all we know.

Rooney rule really needs to be removed. Awful rule to still have in place.

I would definitely recommend against bringing in Norv Turner as an OC.  He really likes 5 & 7-step dropbacks, and until your line is in the top ~12 you definitely don't want to go up a good defense with that philosophy!

I have to agree with this statement.  In my mind once this country has elected a black president, this rule can be insulting by asking a black coach (with no shot) to come in and interview just to satisfy the rule.

Last off-season I remember hearing a lot of the black coaches saying the same thing. If you're qualified, you'll get the interview. Don't interview just because of skin color. That's not better than not interviewing because of skin color to be honest.

I'd hire a Glip Glop from the 3rd dimension if he could coach
IT WAS ALWAYS THE JAGS

I know. I'd love to ask Harold Goodwin if he appreciates being dragged all over the country on these interviews basically wasting much of his time for interviews by GMs who have no intention of hiring him.

I wrote something in response to that, but I edited it out, because if we keep talking about the Rooney Rule, this thread will wind up in the political section.

Let's talk about Mike Smith.

It's incredibly valuable networking regardless of how many teams have real interest in him for the HC position.

As often as the coaching carousel dismantles coaching staffs - he is making valuable connections for possible work as an assistant or coordinator should his current situation have a shake-up.

Not to mention - interviewing well is a skill that you can improve with practice. He's getting it.

Mike Smith is the most successful coach in Falcons history.  Still, I'd like to know what specifically cause the bottom to fall out his last few years there. I live in Atlanta. I should know this, but I don't.

Regarding the O-man supposedly hinting that it might be Mike Smith, the only impression I got reading his answer is that he's just as clueless as the rest of us.

I'm thinking he was getting owned too much by other HCs in the Playoffs.

I'd love for the Jags to be in that position.  We could build from there.
