I'm gonna give him this season, before I make an evaluation.

Gibson should rise this year.

I feel the same.

I think he's got more in him than what last year's scheme served up.

I can't say I'd hate picking up Budda Baker though if the new regime isn't sold on Gipson.

He isn't a world beater but he is the beat FS we have had since Deon Grant. He didn't really give up many big plays last year. He wasn't a liability like we have had in the past.

Well when he's not playing 30 yards off the ball, he should be alright.

That team D int is etched in my cerebrum. Gipson = Gaffe all day, till otherwise. Hurry up mate...

He was a disapppointment for me.

I understand his struggles playing that deep and being a babysitter but he looked soft and afraid of contact at times to me whenver he needed to step up for a tackle.

(ironically one of the few times he didn't look that soft he stripped the ball from Amukamare who had an easy INT in his hands against the Chiefs).

Cyprien was horrible in coverage and I remember reading at the end of the season that both he and Gipson were tied at the 58th place among safeties in coverage. Ugh.

I'm willing to give Gipson this year with a new defensive philosophy and approach hopefully but so far it's not looking good. He's quickly becoming the next in line to be replaced the way this D is shaping up.

Is Gipson our weakest link on defense? Outside of CB2

Quote:As of right now he will be paired with Church which could improve his play. But let's be honest he was very average last year. For the money we forked out, he didn't live up to expectations.

I'm willing to give him another year but if we can get a young guy in that provides the same play then I'm starting the rookie.

I think, like every other defensive back in the history of football, he needs the defensive line to get some pressure on the passer.

THIS! We really have very little idea of what we have because the team was so poorly coached. We need to see what happens with him under a new regime.

Calling Deshawn Watson a future bust since 3/19/17. If I eat crow, I will keep this in here and proclaim JackCity a genius.

Yeah, Gus was the DB coach and D Coordinator, etc. They didn't have roles to perform, his coaching staff that is.

I am not surprised we will put all the woes on his head. It's so far sighted and intelligible, like our dear Jacksonville. JDR, I see you...

Meanwhile, we are retooling perceived weaker links rosterwise. Yet still we pinpoint ex coach, not subpar players, for all the woes. #PainfulReading

Well the DB coach was fired as well. I'm not saying we don't have sub par players, but under Gus we saw Pro Bowlers sign here who all of a sudden weren't good. I think that falls on Gus' "get better everyday don't worry about wins" attitude.

We'll see if I'm right or not.

I am jaded, don't listen to me. You are right dear Skeet, we can't judge any player coached under Gus. We can cut some though, or let some go to FA, randomly, not by performance (which we can't judge due to their previous coaching). As you can see, logic is not my thing

I think he's fine and he's gonna have a bounce back year. He's a playmaker who was limited by Gus' scheme. Now that he is playing alongside a better all-around safety, I think we'll see the team be more creative with him so that he can make his plays.

If his INT inst called back in the Detroit game, and he catches the ball during the Bronco game, I don't believe we are having this conversation.

Quote:He's not the ideal player to play deep center field so frequently.  He clearly had a difficult adjustment to the role, but he wasn't bad.  He just didn't make much positive impact.

It will be interesting to see if they attempt to utilize his skill set more wisely in 2017.

I think that if they don't force him to play quite so deep in their cover one and cover three looks he'd be more effective. I'd love to know where the new secondary coach stands on this topic and this player.

I'd like to see them play some cover two - or at least "show" cover two with the safeties some so he can eyeball the QB a bit and have more chances to jump routes.  He's a safety that benefits from being in the mix more than he was last season.

I think he could be a more impactful player if they can play some cover 2 - disguise the safeties' roles a bit  - and not force him to be deep single high so often.

Pretty much this.

Our pass defense wouldn't have been as solid if the FS play was garbage. He just didn't force the turnovers we had expected, but we also didn't have a consistent pass rush to allow for turnovers to occur.

He definitely needs to take a step forward this year, but he wasn't bad last year and I'm definitely not worried about FS. I assume there's going to be a scheme change and we play more to players strengths as this whole new coaching staff/TC has stated, which should bring some optimism to that.

He was better than anyone else we have had in that position over the last decade.
