Assuming Bridgewater is off the board, which QB would you take?

if we don't get a qb early on

mettenberger and murray could be interesting in the late rounds especially as their injuries will have reduced their stock

still a fan of fales in the third over carr or manziel

Quote:Probably not a good idea here with our QB situation.

I feel bad for Mettenberger. That injury probably cost him millions.

How so? The current CBA guarantees rookie salaries are not based on when they are drafted.

Uh, yes they are.

The new CBA significantly lowered the amount for first round picks (especially QBs), but rookie salaries are slotted - i.e., dependent based on where they are drafted.

I don't think Mettenberger was going a lot higher than where he will end up, and because of that and the new CBA I don't think he'll lose "millions". He will certainly lose some money though. If he plays well when he gets a chance he'll be able to make it up.

The new CBA does base rookie salaries on where they are drafted.

It took away the difference in salaries for first round picks that was causing a lot of holdouts.

Nope, try again.

It drastically reduced the amounts paid to rookies and slotted the order/amounts paid based on the ranking of the draft order - which is the opposite of what you said.

But you're getting closer. The reduction and slotting has ended the need/cause for holdouts.

So I was right about something.

The whole idea for a "rookie wage scale" is to stop paying players for when they are drafted and instead pay them for what they do in the NFL. That is what I always read since the beginning of the new CBA negotiations. How can I read that over and over again and be totally wrong about it?

Back to Mettenberger, it is hard to say right now how much he will be affected in the draft, but I remember Willis McGahee dropped 20 spots while recovering from multiple ligament tears. If a projection is near the top of a round, he could go to a playoff team in that round. It is anybody's guess how much the injury will hurt him on the second day of the draft.

We should look at other quarterbacks who tore knee ligaments in college, quarterbacks who were unable to run and jump at the combine for medical reasons, and how far they dropped in the draft.

I would say Bortles, but I'm not sure if he's worth a top 5 draft pick. I've been a fan of him for awhile (but am a bit of a UCF homer) and was hoping he'd fly under the radar and could be had in the top of the second round.

There is only one problem with that idea: If five teams are 4-12, we will be the last of those five to pick in the second round. How often is a likely first round pick 2-8? Geno Smith dropped to #39 (2-7) - but that was a shocking exception.

I just read a glowing report about Johnny Manziel by Bucky Brooks. It looks to me like Brooks thinks there are so many positives the negatives can be largely ignored, but he does acknowledge Manziel has some faults and is small for a quarterback and describes the type of offense he can thrive in.

Meanwhile, a Sporting News writer was more objective, detailing all of the negatives and positives and how he may fit in the NFL.

Who do you agree with?

If we are inclined to take a QB in the first 1-2 rounds I am on the Manziel train.  Look what he has done with a garbage defense.

My honest opinion about Manziel is that I don't know.  Yes, some of the highlights we saw last night were fun, but they only worked because it was college football.   What he proved last night was that he's a gamer; his mental make-up on the football field is like the opposite of Blaine Gabbert.  But that alone doesn't guarentee long term NFL success.  As far as translating his game to the pro, it will definitely require some time.

I agree with you. I don't know either. Whoever drafts him won't be sure either. Results will answer the question. But right now....color me optimistic.

I see Bortles throwing off his back foot when pressure is coming, I don't like that. Reminds me of Gabbert

Most of the time when hes throwing off his back-foot is when he is dead to rights with the lineman in his face though. Most of the time he can get away and find a wr down the field.

If the Browns and Raiders did not need quarterbacks, I would consider trading down. Their quarterback situations make me think that is not an option for us.
