I've seen Fournette compared to earl campbell and I think that makes the most sense to me. We've seen big and fast guys before but there is a certain violence to his game that is uncommon. You can tell that he enjoys the head on confrontation, he seeks out contact.

 

Remember when that guy ripped Fournette's entire facemask off trying to get him down? 

Remember Earl Campbell getting his whole jersey ripped off as he carried people?

 

 

 

I see Earl Campbell, but I also see Jerome Bettis in Fournette's style as well.

Fred is one of a kind, and I feel like I'll forever be spoiled. AD is more explosive than him, but he doesn't have Fred's wiggle and jump cut ability. Fred's ability to make guys miss is usually reserved to guys 20-30 lbs lighter than him. I think the size is the thing most forget about Fred.

 

I think from height/weight perspective, he's about the same as AD. But watch them with the pads on and Fred's shoulders and upper body looks wider than AD's.

 

 

Yeah.,. except I've always felt that LaDanian Tomlinson... as in the guy who kept beating out Taylor for the Pro Bowl... was virtually the same RB as Fred except that he was a much better receiver which gave him a clear edge. Fred still had a more deadly cut-back, but that was about it. Tomlinson was a complete back.

If I'm gonna take a DE #1 overall, he better be able to do several things, (in no particular order.) 

 

 

#1 Show dominance by consistently beating double teams.

#2 Show dominance by being in the top 5 college players in sacks for at least 2 years.

#3 Show dominance by being in the top 10 college players in tackles for loss for at least 2 years. 

#4 Show the necessary speed to rush off the edge. 

#5 Show a variety of moves to get passed opposing OT's.

#6 Show the size/strength necessary to get passed opposing OT's.

#7 Have a clean off the field record. 

#8 Show an ability to knock down passes at the line of scrimmage.

#9 Show an ability to strip ball carriers of the football. 

#10 Show a history of relatively injury free football.

 

 

Garrett doesn't check all of those boxes for me.

So basically a DE has to be perfect to be taken 1st overall in your book. I don't even think I can think of a prospect DE coming out of college that checks all of those boxes. What other position do you spend the first round pick on? QB? The QBs in this draft are so not worthy of #1. 

 

If you make a case to me that Solomon Thomas should go at 1, I would hear it at least. Yeah I know you would trade down, but someone would want to trade up presumably to get Garrett. Someone has to go #1 overall, who is your pick?

I agree that fournette has average at best lateral agility... but he IS elite when he is past the line of scrimmage. He will easily run away from LBs and safeties and destroy DBs.


If you give him say 250 carries a year - I think you can expect him to "break" one in just about every game as long as you feed him the ball.


Our problem this year was that even when our running backs had some space on the 2nd level, they were so bad that they couldn't finish it. TJ's longest run of the year was 15 yards.


I can pretty much guarantee fournette will have a few 60+ yard touchdowns his rookie year alone.


For the the record, I don't think he's worth the 4th pick overall.

Tomlinson is also a smaller guy than Fred. 

 

That Fred is bigger, faster, and a deadlier cut back runner than LT speaks to how great Fred was.

 

LT was more a complete back when you factor in receiving. But from a pure runner? Fred was better.

DE is a more important position than LT so i have no idea why those two are the only positions that go first
