Best running back draft 2017

(This post was last modified: 03-23-2017, 10:19 PM by MyBloodIsTeal.)

I don't follow college football so I wondering who is the best overall talent wise for a running back?  Please leave the Mixon incident on the sideline, im just asking about pure skills.

I voted Fournette just based on the highlights I have watched of the four.  To me he seems to attack and run over guys with an aggressive running style.

I don't want a Google concensus, I want a Jaguars fan concensus. If you have nothing but negativity or vitriol to add please move along.

It's a tough one between LF and McCaffrey. It really depends how you want to use them. I went with LF cause he is what I want our running game to be. I like CM a lot but watching LF and that violent aggressive running style had me screaming omg at the tv for 2 years. I know LF isnt as fast as Bo Jackson but you gotta admit, that stiff arm is the real deal.

Calling Deshawn Watson a future bust since 3/19/17. If I eat crow, I will keep this in here and proclaim JackCity a genius.

  1. Fournette

  2. McCaffrey

  3. Mixon

  4. Cook

Then a pretty big drop off to the next crowded tier.

Purely based on talent then I choose Mixon.

I just watched film on all four RBs. I've seen much of it before, but just to be sure watched again.

Fournette truly is an absolute beast when you factor in his size and power to go along with that speed. I'm now sold on him at #1.

My #2 RB is McCaffery who I see signs of being an elite RB. Granted he's not Jim Brown as he's not an overly physical runner like Jim was, but he has this way of using his speed and athleticism to evade tackles that makes him special. I'll try to describe what I see... it's like he hits a hole fast and will cut as needed, but just when you think you got him he flips a turbo-boost switch and it outta there, In this manner he's displays a dominance on the field where I feel he'll carry teams to greatness. It's like his will to succeed won't allow him to be tackled.

Fournette and McCaffery are two RBs that I feel will go down in history as truly elite. ...and especially Fournette because he's thicker, stronger and more durable in order to play all 16 games.

Mixon and Cook are tough to decide between for #3. I see Cook and I want to say him for his speed alone. Forget his 40-time... the guy is FAST. But what else really? I don't see any power to his game so he'll have to survive on speed alone. It's great. I love Corey Grant. ...but we picked up Grant in undrafted free agency... not in round one.

Mixon is a good blend of everything with a little bit of power, a little bit of speed, and a little bit of moves. The thing is he's consistently just a hair ahead of defenses who just can't quite get to him. That's great, but he's not overly dominant. When you watch Fournette the guy is consistently overly dominant. I mean, defenses just don't stand a chance. With Mixon it's like defenses would stand a chance if they were just a hair better or faster, and in the NFL they are. I'll give him the edge over Cook only because Cook is sort of a one-trick pony, but Cook is faster Mixon no doubt about it.

My RB rankings based on pure talent remain...

  1. Fournette

  2. McCaffery

  3. Mixon

  4. Cook

I don't really feel there's another RB that's close. Kamara really isn't near these guys, and I kind of like Foreman, Hill and McNichols more than him, but that's all a good tier lower. Perine, Mixon's teammate, is probably just as good as any of these second tier guys. ...Marlon Mack you can put in a third tier around where I see Mixon actually being drafted.

Cook is not just about being fast. While he's the most explosive RB in this top tier IMO, what separates him from Fournette is his vision. Often times there's not a lot happening in the backfield, but you can actually see him set up blocks so that he can use his speed to bounce it outside.

He's easily the best pure runner of the four, IMO.

Fournette, as punishing a runner as he is, is strictly a one-cut runner IMO.

He's Devonta Freeman on steroids. Same pro style system in college but Cook just does everything better.

Damn. When you've got Jerrad calling you a clown.... Might as well pack up and head out.

Don't watch highlight videos. Watch cut-ups. Fournette's highlight videos are downright amazing, but his per-play-cut ups of runs leaves a lot to be desired. This is where you see Cook's pure instinct and ability as a runner over LF.

You know who else has excellent highlight videos? TJ Yeldon.

And as soon as we drafted him, everyone jumped on the hype and made Fred Taylor comparisons. Then he actually played for us..

It's funny that you say that about Cook. When I watch a Cook highlight film I see all the explosive plays. When I watch full games of him, i see him tackled for loss over and over until he breaks a big one.
