Can Nick Marshall help us at cornerback?

#1

I've heard of QBs in high school making the switch to defensive back when they enter college, but this seems a bit late.

I doubt it.

He played cornerback at Georgia, so he is not new to the position.

What I am looking forward to seeing is him take a snap at Wildcat QB during the fourth quarter of the last preseason game.

Marshall at least has a history of playing DB at the college level. He very well could end up getting tried out as a FS.

His best hope is to land on the practice squad.

His best shot is probably special teams.

I believe everybody the team brings in is because they can help the team. They just have to meet their potential. Hopefully Marshall can meet his as I think he has great potential.

Maybe he will be designated a DW.

I dont know what happens when you take a QB and make them a WR (Matt Jones) or Denard Robison (WR-to HB-to Kick off returner)?  I guess we'll have to wait and see doubt he starts this season though.

The most likely scenario is he is put on the PS as a CB. Right kbow is imagine Jax keeps 5-6 CBs:

McCray

Colvin

Gratz

Reynolds

Campbell/Harris

I don't think we'll know what Marshall offers until next season, he's a gifted enough athlete to make the team on ST while he re-acclimates to DB. I could see his turning into a good FS with a year under his belt

I'm not seeing the FS talk. Marshall's best attributes are being able to press at the line using his length. If he makes the team it will be at CB.

I see Marshall making the practice squad this year and possible being activated if we have a few injuries in the secondary. Great athlete, but I think it will be around 3 years before he can be a rotational player, if he ever does make it.

I think they'll stash him initially on the practice squad.

I think he represents some really good value if he can earn himself a roster spot based on his DB skills. If you can hold on to him as the Fifth or Sixth DB, then you also have yourself a trick QB who can run Read Option for you (it's really not that hard to learn, and he ran it a lot at Auburn) whenever you want to throw a wrench into someone's Defensive gameplan.

And if he gets blown up on a Read Option play, you just roll your #1 QB back in there as well as the #5 DB.

I'm trying to make myself more informed and less opinionated.

Stop saying whatever stupid thing you're talking about and pay attention to all the interesting things I have to say!

Agreed.  At best, he's a project that's going to require the extra time to learn his new position.  I don't see him eating up a roster spot while he's learning.
