Interesting. Sounds like he's going with #56, which is a LB number I thought.

He essentially is a LB.

He's going to be doing a lot more than rushing the passer in this defense. He's going to be all over the place, love it.

They've said he's a LEO first and foremost

Sure but I don't think anything I said changes. He's going to be roaming around, my guess, and doing many different things. His label means little.

Actually it does, because your official listed position designates what number you can wear. For him to wear 56, he'd have to be designated officially as a LB. From what they said, he'll be primarily a LEO with the ability to drop and line up inside (straight from Caldwell's quote). But if he's lining up majority of the time as a LEO end, then the NFL could question the number he's wearing (like they did with Hester).

Pretty sure DL can wear a number in the 50s. Lageman was 56 and Babin was 58.

His label by the team might mean something about his jersey number but that's not what I'm talking about.  Either way, he can wear 56 as a DL.

That's a good point. I seem to recall 50s as a LB number. Perhaps its changed with the infusion of the 3-4? If that's the case, then he's good. I like 56. Some pretty darn good company of pass rushers wearing 56.

Apparently they changed DLine to wear 50s-59 in the 80s. I haven't heard of LBs wearing 40s though.

They could wear it in the 70s too (see White, Randy).
