Bortles: Arm 'deteriorated' from overuse as a rookie

Hmmm?  Looks like he was out of shape last year.  I hope he puts in the needed work this off season to get in better shape.  He says he has lost some fat so hopefully it shows on the field.

From college to the combine, predraft process including visits all over, to getting drafted, post draft, minicamps, OTA's, training camp, preseason and the regular season (including about a kadrillion sacks)... Not to mention the FO and Bortles himself last year repeatedly talking about needing to work on footwork and mechanics to further his development and better the transition from college to the pros (which he actually had a chance to work on this offseason), It is easy to understand how Blake's throwing arm could wear down by the end of a very long rookie season.

Oh, and by the way, that 'deteriorated' arm threw alot less int's towards the end of the season, for whatever it's worth

Apparently just everything went wrong for him last year. Rookie receivers not knowing Jack crap about routes, Arm overuse, Terrible Horizontal scheme, Virtually no running game, Rough O-line, Apparently fat <_< , Bad mechanics, etc.

How did he not Blaine Gabbert it all up? Least all that is fixed now except for a running game but hopefully at bare minimum shoelace continues his ascent. I hear our new OC will be installing quite the vertical passing scheme.

Can't wait to see whats next.

sounds like if a trade back/down is possible, Draft Parker(or the best WR available) and the best RB available (in either order) to give the team 2 significant offensive starters

Then go FS or Edge Rusher

Then Slot receiver/Return specialist

Then LB

Then OLine

Then QB

He definitely looked sloppier as the season went on, if his arm was feeling weaker he may have been compensating for it. Would be an explanation for his mechanics regressing. If he can throw like he did at his pro day, in training camp, and in the pre-season for the whole season that would be great.

It's the Jaguars way ever since this new regime took over. Wait until you hear some of these characters on here come up with the excuses when the pressure is on and the losses pile up. They'll code it with another word called "reasons" though. Look out for it.

At least Bortles is comfortable with what was causing him problems last year. He's not blaming other people (like some previous QBs).

Well if you read the article you'd see he wasn't making excuses at all. He came right out and said he didn't think it affected anything. We can speculate and make excuses, but he wasn't.

You got GMs and scouts in this room who over analyze and think they know it all. I didnt see one excuse in that article. All I saw was a QB who recognized his weakness, the effect there of, and took the steps to improve those set weaknesses.

Oh my bad. Those were a bunch of excuses.

If you think I offended you, don't worry, I meant to. #facts

Context, people. Context.

This response from Bortles came when he was being asked about what he will gain from his work in California over the past several weeks.

He went on to talk about how his conditioning and improved technique should keep him from wearing down his arm - since he'll be in better shape and use his lower body more efficiently in his throwing motion.

It does seem that he's very confident in the work he's done for his mechanics and footwork. I'm believing more and more that we'll see a much improved Bortles this season. Not that I really had any doubt's anyway

Caldwell certainly has two choices. Get your QB all he needs by sacrificing draft value (By going Off. first 2 days) or keep said value (drafting defense likely) and hope you did enough in Free agency. Amari Cooper and Todd Gurley would be sexy picks.

You know what I don't like hearing from our fanbase? Ignorance.... Excuses sometimes = valid reasons. Everyone screws up and makes bad decisions. The good ones learn from them and make themselves better (i.e lose weight, work on mechanics, have a throwing camp, etc).

GO JAGS!!

I still think Bortles can be the guy, but I think the Jags should try to get another young QB in camp on the cheap.

Look at a team like the Jets who destroy every quarterback they pick.  With Fitzpatrick starting for them, I say we offer them a late round pick to pry Geno Smith away.  He was a productive college quarterback with lots of upside.

Competition is a good thing.
