Pretty much saying that Mariota does not have the smarts to be an NFL QB, while Winston has better qualities. Says Mariota would need to be in a perfect situation to succeed right away. Compares it to what Blaine Gabbert experienced in Jacksonville. Said Blaine was good but just could not learn the playbooks.

I kind of agree with his take. I think its interesting because i feel like theres this huge lust for Mariota for some because he is a great guy. But its also true that he may struggle in the pros with a much more complicated playbook, instead of pop up signs he looked at with Oregon.

I disagree.

Gabbert's main problem was that he was a big feline.

i also disagree. gabbert was scared of the pressure. mariota isnt scared to take a hit and maybe itll take him a while to learn the playbook, if mjd even knows that information about him somehow...but in time he will learn it.

Coughlin when asked if winning will be a focus: "What the hell else is there? This is nice and dandy, but winning is what all this is about."

We all know Gabbert was scary but if the guy who played with him says he failed because he couldn't learn plays then I'll go with that.

I agree with MJD on this. I know that it's kind of unpopular to think this way, but Gabbert never really looked scared to me. He just looked confused. That whole "freeze like a cat caught with the lights on" look that always came about two seconds after the snap was what gives me that impression. It wasn't that he was scared; he just didn't know what to do.

I'm trying to make myself more informed and less opinionated.

Yea Mariota would been to sit for a while unless he goes to phly.

Thats interesting about Gabbert, we knew he was scary but also couldnt learn the playbook, he got a 40 on the wonderlink, shows it means nothing

exactly, I dont see how the two posts above you are claiming MJD is wrong about him not knowing the playbook, when MJD played with the dude from day 1

Gabbert always had better tools the MM, didnt they run a similar 40 time? MM only has college production over Gabbert

I don't see where I said that MJD was wrong about knowing the playbook. Hence the word MAIN in my reply.

I would have to lean with what MJD said about Gabbert. I don't think he was scared so much as he was thinkng to much. Him not being able to learn the playbook will manifest in his play on the field looking like he was scared. When you think to much, you get what you got with Gabbert.

Regardless whether he was scared or not, he crumbled under pressure. That's unfortunately not something you can coach either.

That would certainly explain Gabbert's tendency to look lost in the pocket.

Of course, the same issues he had with learning the playbook were there for Garrard. He was another QB who needed the playbook reduced to make it manageable.

Agreed. It makes a lot of sense. The fact that it's MJD saying it gives it more credibility. His comparison to Mariota? Not good for any team other than the Eagles.

my question is, how does MJD know anything about mariota besides what we know or what the talking heads know?

Gabbert was a phony incapable of throwing with touch/accuracy/anticipation, afraid of contact, and as mobile as a statue. He was drafted because his hair and misrepresentative combine. Any comparison of anyone to Gabbert is laughable, he was a very special kind of bad

MJD isn't going to say anything to throw Gabbert under the bus but you can believe he knows Gabbert just simply wasn't good, and that's where his real comparison lies.

this also reminds me how all kinds of players were talking about how great manziel was and they thought he was the best qb in the class. 99% of players are just as clueless as we are.

Its not hard to know MM plays is a one read offense thats a lot about deception, where the learning curve to the NFL is huge

MJD was Gabbert's teammate for several years. I think i would take his point on the playbook and maybe Gabbert did struggle with NFL offenses. I think the point about Gabbert and Mariota was that Mariota is not as polished as Winston. Mariota like Gabbert came from a spread offense to NFL offenses, its not easy to go from a spread to a pro style. And Mariota likes to run the ball as well, again, running QB have had hard times transitioning. I think like Gabbert, Mariota either needs the perfect system or should sit a year and develop. Gabbert should of had that....but was thrown into a fire with a team in flames ( jaguars) and just never was able to get it going.

I definitely think Gabbert is not a franchise player, and his internal clock was all messed up. But i think Mariota may run into the same issues if he is thrown into the fire just like Gabbert was.
