Bortles Expectation? Will Joeckel be better? And if Blackmon returns?

Quote:See this is what I don't get...why do you "think he will be fine"? What exactly has he done to warrant this kind of confidence? It looks a lot like blind hopeful faith on your part.

But it's not just you. I wrote Justin off after his, I dunno, 3rd arrest(?) and of course got mercilessly crushed by "leave Justin alone! / he's young and allowed to have fun!" crowd.

And besides if was serious about getting back to the NFL, wouldn't people be running into him at, I don't know...a gym..or a track...or a field, in stead of casinos. <-- crazy talk I know.
You wrote him off, and some people haven't. You shouldn't expect everyone to feel and think the same way you do. That's not how life works buddy.

I'm not writing him off, but I have been saying for a long time that he comes back to the Blackmon everyone knew and loved (who wasn't nearly as good as perceived even back then, to be fair) is slim to none.

You know, the oft stated research about players gone for 2 years...and the most successful comeback ever in that circumstance being Plaxico Burress as a strict red zone option. Even if Blackmon does surpass that and essentially become the greatest long term redemption story in WR history...there is a huge chasm between being that and becoming what he was, the gap is that big.

A mid level possession Z/slot receiver would be a great outcome for him honestly.

I always thought his "ceiling" now would be something like a better Cecil Shorts.  I'd be very happy with that.

Our 2 receivers that need to develop are Lee and Robinson.  IF they don't, we still won't have a good WR group.

Quote:I personally try to shy away of the thought of expecting a certain stat line. I will say this though, I would definitely like to see a 3:1 or 4:1 TD/INT ratio this year. I think thats a standard that should be expected (if I'm not mistaken, QB's target a 5:1 or better).

If Bortles has a 3 to 1 TD to INT ratio we will win the division.  There is very little chance of that happening.  I think the highest expectation one could really have is a 2.5 to 1 TD ratio with 25 TDs and 10 interceptions.  I think it'll look like 20 and 15 though.

Keep in mind 25 touchdowns would be a franchise record for a season.

I've been "google"ing Justin Blackmon's name for weeks, waiting to see any shred of hope that he would be coming back, and if so, would he be in football shape. After seeing the photo posted of him on Twitter, I am not very optimistic. I would think that a guy that is on the fringe of possible reinstatement would be conditioning himself to be competitive. The picture could be a little deceiving, but it appears that he has some work to do in the gym. First and foremost, I hope that he has conquered some of the demons that got in to trouble in the first place. I'm not sure what business he would have had in Vegas...probably not the best place for someone to be who is "rehabbing". But I think that just as serious of an issue is his determination to come back, or lack thereof. I hope that he is able to dig deep and get back to pro form, but I am skeptical. Not trying to be a pessimist, but my contentions are...does he have the discipline needed? I would love nothing more than for him to come back and be beastly for this team. But it will require a fire to be lit, and I'm not talking about a water bong. I think at this point, we should consider signing a Michael Crabtree type, or drafting Kevin White/Amari Cooper.

Cecil has some high expectations for Bortles.

Last quarter of the season, last 4 games, Bortles had 2 TDs to 2 Ints.  Not sure what to expect this next year.  Julius gives him a fairly reliable big target that should assist him, and he should be better at reading NFL coverage.  I think we'll see this next season something closer to 16 TDs and 12 Ints.  He's still only 22 and has a lot of learning to do, but I do think the upside is still there.

For such a high pick, even with the rookie injury, I expected better play from Joeckel this past season, especially late.  I hope he has kicked it this offseason and surprises the naysayers like me.  He just seems soft to me...keeping my fingers crossed that he'll break out.

Blackmon was arrested again in July 2014 while under suspension.  I think this event, less than a year ago, didn't help his return in the league's eyes.  I don't foresee him being back for the start of the season, in any condition.

I just want people to realize left tackles rarely come in the league and dominate right away. Look how much other recent left tackles drafted have faired. There is a learning curve and Joeckel was coming off an injury. Just be patient.

Hopefully Luke achieves his goal

“I’m definitely extremely excited to finish this year strong and I’m hoping that next year is going to be my breakout year,’’ he said. “I want to play with consistency. Consistency is the most important thing. That’s what the good players in this league do. They play on a high level on a consistent basis.’’

You're allowed to have your opinion on Blackmon, and you're right that he's been in a lot of trouble and faces a long road back, but no one knows if he's been working out or if his heart is in the game or not. As someone who's made a mistake before, I'm willing to say he should get a shot at redemption, although the leash should certainly be short.

I don't see why people take such a hard line on Justin Blackmon, positive or negative, when we're about to see what happens in a few months. The odds are stacked against him, but I'm rooting for him. He's shown the potential.

I think Blake will be a star.I'm looking forward to seeing the jump from year 1 to year 2.

Regarding JB,if he has a strong desire to return to the field, then he'll get in shape. He's an athlete. Many players let it go a little in the offseason. And a WR losing a few pounds is alot different than Knighton,or so.

He also doesn't look THAT out of shape to me. Not to mention that's not a very flattering shirt in general. I don't see a gut, I see a bad picture/shirt. Maybe a different angle or shirt would shed some light. His arms look plenty big. JB also wasn't terribly big to begin with, the guy next to him is obviously like 6-4.

That being said, he's obviously not in football shape. But I think people over react the ability of him to get back where he was. Even with some alcohol problems, its only been 2 years since he was playing and he's young. I honestly don't even see him necessarily having as bad long term effects of drinking. I think he was more just a chronic partier and couldn't control himself. There was a dark time in my own life where I'd get blackout drunk all everyday even when home by myself, that lasted for about a year and a half straight, and besides maybe a little damage to my liver and a couple months for hormone levels to stabilize, anything physiological has passed long long ago. I think he CAN be absolutely fine. Is he mentally ready is another story.
