Contract extension opinion question

#1

Based on the what transpired in the first few days of the FA period and the overall current Jaguars roster,  which players on the roster that are scheduled to be UFA's in 2016 or 2017 do you believe Dave Caldwell will seek to sign to contract extensions in the remainder of 2015?

The reason this question comes to mind is despite making around 7 FA additions in recent days,  the Jags still have tons of salary cap space.   While I expect more Free Agents to be signed by the Jags in the coming weeks and months,  it seems like the team will still have plenty of cap space to get players extended if they choose that route.

There's not a whole lot out there worth extending. 2017 is the first year we have some real guys potentially worth locking up (2013 draft class) but no reason to look into that 2 years in advance. This is 2016. Who here are you dying to lock up? Scobee? Anger? Branch?

Pretty much all the players who would qualify for that extension have yet to earn that extension.

Strictly speaking, under the latest rules, you cannot extend a player's contract until after his 3rd season.    So the players that were drafted in 2013 can be extended after the 2015 season.    So out of those guys, I assume maybe some of them play well enough that we decide to extend them early after the end of this upcoming 2015 season.

Joeckel, Cyprien, Demetrius McCray, etc.

Then, after the 2016 season, we should have a boatload of players who can be extended a year early.   Bortles, etc.

We have until March of 2017 to hit the 89% threshold.

No!!! Nobody is worthy of a contract extension imo on this roster! But that could change with a great season nxt year and some great individual performances

They'll be able to hit the 89% minimum threshold without forcing extensions prematurely.

The interesting thing is, the 89% threshold is in terms of cash spending, not salary cap.   So a signing bonus will count immediately in full towards the 89% threshold, even though for salary cap purposes it is applied in equal amounts over the life of the contract.  In other words, it should be very easy to hit the 89% threshold, even if we're way under the cap!

Scobee

Anger

Branch

Are the only ones I'd really like to keep. Scobee is still one of the best kickers in the league, no need to replace him. People hate on Anger bc of his draft round, that's not his fault. He's a perfectly good punter and I'd rather keep him than try to find a guy again like we went through before. Branch is getting better every year and a solid rotational guy, I see no reason why he wouldn't get extended barring a complete collapse this year.
IT WAS ALWAYS THE JAGS

Thank you for the reminder regarding the new CBA rule regarding contracts not being able to be extended until after the 3rd season.   This totally slipped my mind until reading your reply.    This is something I didn't even consider not just last night but in the weeks leading up to the 2015 FA period.

Originally,  an aspect of my question was which players do Jaguars fans and others believe will play well enough during the 2015 season. that are scheduled  to be UFA's in 2016 or  2017, that would warrant strong consideration for a contract extension?

These are the 3 players on the list that TheSlinger provided that jumped out for me as possibilities.

Because both kicking specialists are scheduled to enter Free Agency the same year,   it increases the chances of at least one of them getting a contract extension.  That would give the Jaguars the flexibility of keeping both of them,   by using the Franchise or Transition Tag on the other,  if they believe both are important players moving forward.

Im not sure Blackmons contract would run out after this season. He has only 1 year towards UFA anyway. So he could be back cheap.

As of those players though theres pretty much no one to resign

not really concerned tbh right now, too many players can change between now and than.... I don't really think forecasting this early is in anyones best interest, a lot can happen.

Im focused on the draft right about now

The kicking specialists, maybe. Sam Young if Caldwell wants to troll us.

Blackmon, you have to lock him up on a long term deal

Didn't Blackmon's deal "freeze" when he was suspended?

So he actually has another year on his contract because he was suspended for >1 year.

If that information is accurate, he will actually be a restricted free agent at the end of the 2016 season.

Since he missed the entire 2014 season, his contract should jump to the 2016 season since he didn't get a credited season.  Assuming he plays enough to earn an accrued season (be paid for 6 or more games) in the 2015 and 16 seasons, he should be restricted since he only accrued in 3 of his 4 seasons.
