You could always just add this to the current Mayweather-Pacquio thread.

Perhaps if there is nothing else going on and a friend pays for it I'll watch it but to be honest, I have no interest in this fight or anything else boxing has to offer these days.

Boxing is Dead.

I'm not a mod but when I added it to my resume, I was getting a lot of cold calls for CEO positions throughout the nation.

It works, it really does.   Even better than 10 years ago when I falsely added MIT to my resume.

Quote:What I have noticed over the years is that the first thing that goes in a boxer is head movement. This is especially important in an offensive fighter who moves forward. They get older, they lose the ability to reflexively move their head out of the way of a punch, and they seem to lose the continuous head movement required to keep an opponent confused. When a fighter tries to get inside, he has to keep his head moving at all times or he's just going to walk right into punches. A defensive fighter who generally is moving backwards or side to side isn't as reliant on head movement to avoid being hit.

I've also noticed over the years that boxing fans tend to greatly overrate offensive fighters and greatly underrate defensive fighters.

What I have just said may seem obvious to all you boxing aficionados, but I'm just explaining why I am picking Mayweather to win. Both these guys are getting older, but I think age affects a fighter with Pacquiao's style more than it would affect a fighter with Mayweather's style. I don't know what would have happened if these guys had fought a few years ago, but right now, I think Mayweather will pick him apart and win easily.

I agree with most of your post. A few things I would add.

I think many people over value offensive fighters because they are more exciting to watch. That's no surprise really, who doesn't like brawlers and heavy punchers? I think defensive fighters are more appreciated by heavy boxing fans while offensive fighters are exciting to both casual and serious fans.

Personally I like fighters who are in between. I like defensive fighters who can turn on the offense fight and finish guys when they have the chance. Recently Mayweather has been only defensive and hasn't flipped that switch to get guys out when he could. He's been content coasting to decision wins. I can respect that because it still takes a great deal of skill but it's also frustrating and boring.

I wouldn't do anything once I was given the role...it was a pure resume builder.

Come on dude, boxing is still a great sport.  I'm guessing you like the UFC where two dudes spoon each other for 5 minutes a round.  I know they are in their mid/late 30's, but it's still going to be a great fight.  I won't spend the 100 dollars, but I will be at a bar watching history. Mayweather 47-1 LOL.

I always love when someone says they dont like boxing, and the boxing fan comes back with oh man you must like the UFC and watching the guys grind on the mat for 15 minutes.

There is more action in the UFC than a very large percentage of boxing matches.  It's got old and stale...and when you combine that with the shady promoters, the product has killed itself.

Yeah it works both ways. The "purists" of boxing enjoy the defensive fights. But ask a "purist" of MMA to break down "guys grind on the mat for 15 minutes", and they will tell you about the little nuisance that the one on the bottom had to do in order to not be put in a position to get ground and pounded or submit.

There's so much that goes into it.

Boxing has lost interest because of star power.  If you get a good American heavyweight, the perception will shift again.  At the same time you had Tyson, Riddick Bowe, Holyfield, and many more heavyweights that had personality and could fight.  I watched the NBC boxing last week.  It was a great show and some good fights.

The UFC has some big guys that can bang and thats what draws fans.  There are a lot more knockouts.  It's more crowd pleasing.

Also works for late night pickup strategies.  Telling a drunk chick at 2am that you're a Jaguar Moderator works every time.

Personally I lost a lot of interest in boxing with some of the phony decisions that I started seeing.  To me, it became obvious that something fishy was going on.

I watched a lot of boxing in the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s.  I lived in Philly and went to Atlantic City several times to see minor events.  Things just seemed to change about the time Larry Holmes was winding down.  It just seemed like boxing and promoters got really crooked along the way.

I’ve tried getting back into, but just can’t.  I think I’m just permanently jaded at this point.

Boxing is still a great sport, but as someone else mentioned they don't have the star power. There aren't many left that move the needle. Also, I think pay-per-view hurt the sport more then it helped. I think the UFC has done a nice job mixing in pay-per-view with free fights.

It's crazy to think the sport has gone this long without any great heavy weights.

I agree with you.

For anybody interested NBC has started showing nationally broadcast quality fights through their PBC (Premier Boxing Champions) series. It's basically Shobox or HBO Boxing but on NBC. Pretty good card this weekend.
