'WELCOME TO SOCIALISM' Ivy League students erupt over $350 health care fee

Cornell students erupt over health care fee

Students at vaunted Cornell University are plenty smart enough to know they should not have to pay a penalty for not buying the school's health insurance if they already have coverage, but that's exactly what a new policy at the Ivy League school requires.

Obama doing a great job of adding to the middle class. So what if they used to be the upper class...

Whether you want it or not you'll pay. Whether you already have it or not you'll pay. Because we know better than you what you need.

I have a simple solution.   Raise tuition by $350, then lower the fee for enrolling in the health plan by $350.   The net result is the same.

Yep, more money out of the consumer's pockets to grease the palms of big government and the academic industry.

If you don't like what the University is doing, then exercise your freedom and go somewhere else.  Cornell is a private school, and they can set the price of admission however they want.   Granted, they should not have blindsided anyone with this fee, but if they just raise the cost of tuition by $350, then everyone pays and no one needs to argue about it, because it's just part of the price of admission.

Cornell is a private school.   It's no more a part of the government than Wal-Mart or Exxon.   They have a perfect right to set their prices and policies however they want within the law.   Do you want to regulate free enterprise, or are you just opposed to people having health insurance?

Lol being against state mandated insurance or fines is different from being against people having insurance. Your last question is so loaded it's ridiculous.

This case specifically sounds more like a private school taking advantage of a new situation. It says if students opt out of the schools health plan even though they have their own insurance somewhere else the school is fining them $350.

Bottom line is the ACA is going to raise healthcare cost significantly in all areas. everyone is going to pay more, for that you can thank Obama, the democrats and the insurance lobbyist

How is anyone forcing anyone to buy a Cornell education?   Cornell is a private business.   Are they not entitled to price their product any way they want?

Well the school specifically stated the new policy was in response to the ACA legislation requiring them to provide everyone with insurance. They are trying to offset rising cost and having students or staff opt out of the 2300 premium isn't affordable without at least the 350 fine ( according to the school). So yes the legislation Creating the additional cost which makes private individuals purchase insurance is a direct cause of this situation.

This is just another example of the problems with mixing free markets and socialism. Now you have a semi-socialized health care system trying to work in a free market and they just don't mix it's oil and water. The fuel of a free market is competition mixed with supply and demand, when you remove the option of going without a product from the consumer the ability to control cost goes out the window. You either have to fully socialize it or get government the hell out of it. Speaking first hand knowledge I want nothing to do with socialized medicine.

Being forced to pay an "Opt Out" fee is the same as the IRS fining you for not having insurance.

You said it yourself, "Granted, they should not have blindsided anyone with this fee." That's part of why people are upset. The other is now they will be forced to pay for something they neither want, nor need because they already have coverage.

Cornell should Grandfather in current students so they don't have to pay for this and make it part of the tuition for new students if this is the road they want to travel with this.

I agree with that.

It is the school's decision to levy the fee. The students that must pay the fee already satisfy the requirements of the ACA.

Try as you may to blame all this country's ills on Obama, this one is a reach.

Its simple expansion of the claim dollars through premiums and fees. When Cornell is required by law to cover everyone who doesnt have insurance then everyone has to pay Cornell so they can cover the costs. Healthy people and those who never file claims with their plan are required to keep the plan solvent. This true in any insurance scheme.

Like the Social Security scheme, it depends on Healthy working people to get it solvent so the retirees can keep getting there check
