If the Titans decide to pass on the QB and select Leonard Williams with the 2nd pick, should the Jags select the remaining QB and then attempt to work out a trade while not on the clock? Of course, I am assuming that the Jags would attempt to make the trade down while on the 15 minute selection clock, but perhaps the Jets, Bears, Rams or Eagles might feel the Jags are bluffing. So the question posed is whether the Jags should select the QB and then attempt to work out the best trade available?

Personally I think it would work and force them to trade with us. On the other hand, it's a big gamble and I'm not sure it would work. It could be that since we now HAVE to trade him away, we end up getting less.

No. As an above poster said, that puts us in a position where we need to trade him away, which lowers his value. Not to mention that if we didn't trade him away we wasted the number three pick.

Randy Gregory has a lot of potential in this defense so I think you need to go the safe route at #3 and select him if L. Williams is gone.

 

I just don't think teams will be in desperate mode to get Mariota UNLESS he lights it up at the combine.

No. The only way in which it would make sense to draft a QB at #3 is if we are receiving calls from multiple teams looking to move up to 3 to get a QB. That way we could force these teams into a bidding war where the highest bid wins. Of course, as others stated this is very risky. You have to almost know for about 100% sure that you are going to be able trade him.

 

I could in all reality see a situation in which we trade with someone in the 5-13 range and they select someone like Shane Ray or Dante Fowler and then trade that player and a couple of picks for the QB that we chose for them whether it was Winston or Mariota.

What's crazy is the difference in draft strategies from the NFL and NBA.  NBA teams quite frequently draft players that they tradeoff minutes or hours later in the draft whereas NFL teams trade picks instead of actually selecting the player to be traded during the draft.

Those trades are worked out in advance.   In fact, the TV commentators will say something like "Sacramento is selecting him for Philadelphia."

Difference is the Chargers didn't use a top 5 pick on a QB the year before, if they got "stuck" with Manning, I think they were OK with that.
