Speaking of throwing a pass from the opponent's goal line, in the 4th quarter of a tight playoff game, the Jaguars did it in Buffalo in 1996.   From the Bills' goal line (2 yard line I think), in the 4th quarter, Mark Brunell threw a wide receiver screen pass to Jimmy Smith for a touchdown. 

 

So, don't say no one does that.   We did it ourselves.

If you watch the sound fx video on NFL.Com Pete Carroll recognizes their goal line coverage, and says let's pass it. I think he did it right. The players didn't execute. Baldwin got jammed by Browner, and Lockette wasn't aggressive enough on the ball, finally Wilson didn't throw it well. I don't blame Carroll on that.

we had like 8 attempts from the 1 yard line in 2014.  7 were rushes with 4 tds i think.  1 pass was intercepted.

I don't know why everyone is so exasperated about this play! The pat's were surely expecting the run, so a pass should have been effective... providing the 'hawks executed the play... which they didn't and they lost as a result. That single play didn't lose them the game anyway; there had also been a perfectly thrown pass down field earlier which probably would've led to 6 if the receiver hadn't developed a case of butterfingers and dropped it. The 'hawks defense did allow the 'pats to come back for the lead. So no... that last play didn't lose the game, it just sealed the deal.

Problem is, they didn't have enough time plus timeouts to run the ball 3 more times.   It was 2nd down and they had one timeout left and the clock was running.  

 

Also, the Pats put in their goal line defense.    A pass play can be justified under those circumstances.   I'm not saying I would do it.  

 

The thing that is being overlooked is that Belichick did not call a timeout to preserve some clock for a desperation comeback if the Seahawks scored.   Not calling timeout threw all the pressure on the Seahawks to get a play called and executed.  Tick tock tick tock, call the play, hurry up.   Belichick may or may not have done it on purpose, but him not calling timeout put a lot of pressure on the Seahawks sideline.

But there is no way I'm throwing the ball there. If I was forced to, I throw a fade to Matthews who was winning jump balls all game.

The only problem with that is the Patriots adjusted by putting the 6'4" Brandon Browner on Matthews.  The matchup advantage matthews was enjoying over the Pats backup CB was gone by then.

 

If I had to throw the ball there, I'd go play action and roll Wilson out.

I didn't mind the pass play, especially as Carroll had stated it was because of NE's goal line package.  I just hated the particular play.  Throw it towards the outside or behind the defense, not in the front-middle where everyone is all clumped up there.  You're just asking for an INT, which is exactly what happened.

Belichick said he was thinking about it all the way down to one second, then he thought, like you pointed out, it would add pressure, plus he liked his match up on the field. Looks like he was correct.
