Wrote a bit about Samaje Perine for this upcoming draft.

Been wanting to try write something to do with football for ages so I gave it a try.

I guess I just don't like running backs that aren't home run threats. Perine looks very solid and strong, but I personally hope we pass on him in the first 3-4 rounds.

Its a fair point as he's petty much the same as a Ivory. We need a big play guy, havn't had one at RB since MJD.

I think adding more gifs would be beneficial, but only a few more. I've seen reports where there are 50 gifs which is too much.


Personally, this is how I view running backs. RBs at this level can all pretty much run with decent blocking. What can they do above the Xs and Os? Will they be able to take a 2 yard loss and turn it into a 50 yard touchdown sometimes? If the safety takes a bad angle, does the RB score a touchdown, or does he just gain an extra 12 yards?


This is why I would rather have Mixon over Perine.


Perine has intriguing size, but I wish he was more of a quick twitch player. NATRONE Means was like 245 and was extremely quick as well. I think Natrone Means would be the 2nd or 3rd best RB if he was coming out this year.

I get that but think Perine goes above and beyond the Xs and Os in his own way. You can design any kind of defense you want but if the running back can break a tackle or two it changes everything.


Because I had to watch Perine so much I ended up watching a ton of Mixon too. Mixon is amazing. Can do it all.

I think you are more correct when you say he simply hasn't had that many opportunities. But I've seen nothing in what we have seen to suggest he can't catch.


And as for the top speed, I'm not sure that's a big deal. You are drafting him to break tackles and be a goal-line threat primarily. If he runs through a bunch of players and gets a big gain here or there then great.


Bigger worry for me is that he might not find it so easy to trample over NFL players.


If he can, then he could be our LeGarrett Blount - he's not got the greatest top-speed, but he's been effective enough.

I watched 8 of his games as that's all I could find, he caught 4 passes in total and looked natural doing so. What I noticed was that the QB rarely if ever looked at him as a checkdown and a lot of the time Perine didn't offer himself up as a receiver even when he wasn't pass blocking. Don't know if that's by design or not.


He plays a lot like Spencer Ware for the Chiefs. Great at breaking tackles and runs really hard.

Sometimes that can't necessarily be measured by a 40 time, but I do think he's faster than a 4.6 though. In the past 3 years, he has long runs of 66, 72 and 66 yards. He also averaged runs of 6.0 and 6.5 yards per carry, before this season where he really split time in the backfield with Mixon. His numbers dipped to a still very respectable 5.4 yards per carry. I think he is a really good mix of power and big play ability. The only thing that concerns me about him is the same thing that concerns me about Fournette, injuries.

I think a 4.55 is more along the lines of his abilty. I know a lot of NFL RB's who turned out to be stars, who ran in that range.

Yeah I'd love him with our 3rd round pick.

Reminds me of Spencer Ware a lot. Ware ran a 4.6 on his pro day but looks faster than Perine in general. He should get really high marks in everything else.

Yup. Freeman is faster than Perine, Bell ran 230 but is at around 220 now and is much faster/agile.


Perine might be able to cut 10 pounds , gain some more speed and still be very good.

A lot of players lose some weight before the Combine. We'll just have to wait and see what he comes in at. It doesn't matter who we draft at RB though unless we address the O-Line as well and I'd still like to add a blocking FB. I think that could help immensely.
