Trading players for picks

#1

Last year, four of our picks came from trading players to other teams: a fourth for Mike Thomas, a fourth and a fifth for Eugene Monroe, and a sixth for Blaine Gabbert. This afforded us the ability to move from the third round to second round to pick Allen Robinson, who was our best wide receiver before he got hurt. One of the extra picks was spent on Aaron Colvin, who has shown promise in his limited playing time. It looks like David Caldwell was smart to trade players for extra picks. Should he try to do it again? If so, who would you trade and for what pick?

Lewis but nobody wants an overpaid TE that can't catch

We thought nobody wants a quarterback who can't throw and look what happened.

I don't see it happening. I think the team has shed most (if not all) of the players that Caldwell considered to be expendable holdovers from the past regime, and we're getting to the point where the guys we have are the young core of the new-look roster.

The two obvious choices, if we did go the players for picks route, would be Poz and Marcedes Lewis. The problem is that no one's going to take those contracts, so unless those two take a pay cut to facilitate a trade (here's a hint: they won't), we'll be going into the draft this season with the picks we have now.

If returns from the suspended list, I would not be shocked if I read Blackmon has been traded.  However, I would not like to see this happen.

If we did not want him anymore, he would have been cut last year.

Oh, no.  Whether we want him or not, he has some value, and value should never be thrown away.   After all, why cut him when you can trade him for a late round draft pick?

David Caldwell said it would be a luxury to get him back. He has made it clear we are not giving up on him.

There was no reason to cut him, as he has value, and he cost nothing to retain on the roster while in his suspension.  I did not say or indicate that the organization did not want him last year.
