Top free agent targets

#1

The Jaguars should again be active in free agency this year. Which 2 players who are at least 50-50 to hit free agency would you like to see the Jags target? My 2 would be:

1. Kevin Zeitler

2. Jason Pierre-Paul

Zeitler would fill a big need at guard. Although there should be some solid interior linemen in the draft, the best (Feeney, Elflein, Lamp) are likely to be gone by the time the Jags pick in the 3rd round. If Jamal Adams isn't their 1st round pick, I'd rather see the Jags take Budda Baker in the 2nd since they will likely need another safety.

Pierre-Paul has a connection to Coughlin and can still get to the quarterback. Adding him to Yannick and Fowler should continue to improve the pass rush. Solomon Thomas or Jonathan Allen could end up being high on the Jaguars draft board, but I have a hunch they go offense in round 1.

With these free agents, Fournette would be the best option in round 1. They could then take Baker in round 2 and they will have addressed their major needs:

1. Interior of offensive line

2. Reliable #1 running back

3. Safety (Cyprien will be gone)

4. Pass rush

With the remainder of the draft and free agency they can find a better backup to Bortles, one more offensive lineman and possibly a tight end if Thomas is let go (50-50 chance in my opinion).

I expect Eric Berry and Chandler Jones to return to their current teams or they would have been my picks.

- Jabaal Sheard

- Dontari Poe

- Ronald Leary

Great draft to get a RB and TE (regardless if Thomas is cut or not)

I'd have JPP as a priority and then pick up Warford for Zietler. The rest can just be small pick ups / draft picks.

Curious what kind of contract JPP would ask for? He has indicated he would not sign any one year deal

I wouldn't be so sure Cyp is gone. I think we resign him.

This might be the offseason where big splashes may not be in the best interest for the Jags, unless Caldwell decides to cut some players that are not producing at their contract level AND cutting that player results in little to no dead money moving forward. The reason being is the Jags have 5 players reaching FA next season that I am sure Caldwell may try to reach long term with some of them this offseason. They are Linder, Colvin, Arob, Lee, and Telvin. Letting them all hit FA next offseason would be a big gamble and a huge mistake in my opinion. They all are going to get a decent amount for a contract, maybe something like Linder 8 mil/yr, Telvin 6.5 mil/yr, Arob is going to want 10+, Lee no clue yet but Hurns got 10M so who knows, and Colvin maybe 5 mil?

With that being said, if the plan is to add a big contract to the roster like a Zeitler or a JPP while considering the future expiring contracts some names to consider cutting are:

Odrick- 8.5M- cutting results in no dead cap

House- 6.0M- no dead cap

Parnell- 6.5M- no dead cap

Skuta- 4.1M- no dead cap

Miller- 4.1M (big achilles injury too)- 300K dead cap

Marks-4.6M- 200K dead cap

Obviously I am not suggesting cut all these players, but I am just saying I wouldn't be surprised to see a couple names on this list cut to make room for a splash while considering future contracts.

Personally I'd like to see the Jags retain Abry Jones, sign JPP and Warford, and extend Linder, Telvin, and Arob (maybe a discount after a down year?).

I'd have no problem cutting every one of the players on that list to clear up cap space. All of them are pretty useless, with the exception or big Roy. But an Achilles injury at this point in his career is probably going to have a significant impact on his physical skills. We definitely need to retain Abry. I think the sky is the limit for him, he became one of my favorite Jags last year.

JPP is also from Florida, might want to see out the rest of his career nearer to home..

No problems cutting any of the above with the exceptions of Parnell and House. If the team finds a RT I have no problems cutting Parnell. I think the Jags might want to hang onto House in case Prince leaves. Add Henne to the cut list as well. I hope the team only keeps two QB's with a third on the practice squad.

I really want JPP in Jacksonville. I think that would be one serious statement.

80% of what I talk about is nonesense.. the other 25% is made up statistics...

But there are two other Florida teams, you know. What are the chances he might like Miami or Tampa more than Jacksonville?

They don't have Tom Coughlin who drafted him or as much cap space as far as I'm aware.

Tampa Bay has a lot, I think the most in the league. Definitely enough to sign him.

Still no Coughlin though, I reckon he'll end up staying in NY

I'd like to see Jax go hard after JPP and Rick Wagner.
