Reality Shows...Nat Geo..etc

#1

Am I a naive reality show watcher?

Why would guys go on tv wearing masks show their illegal activities. National Geographic is a reputable station, I think. But recently I was watching the underworld gun trade. Drug transactions. Meth wars.

They were showing and interviewing illegal gunsmiths. Showing how they duplicated guns.

Why on earth would they submit to the exposure?

It looks legit and the interviewees seem legit....but why?

Are they paid a ton of cash? Is some just pure ego?

Moonshiners is another example. It has to be fixed. After one season, you'd think the cops, ATF would be on them like a wino on a bottle of ripple.

I'm not familiar with all the shows you're talking about thought I have seen the moonshiner one. Basically, it's cheap fiction. Producers don't care what is actually real, they just tell a story. The TruTv channel was pretty forthcoming that their reality shows were scripted. Some of these people may exist in real life, but the line between scripting and reality is completely blurred, and that is why they "get away with it".

The ones that get me are the survival shows where the protagonist is climbing up a cliff or swimming through shark infested watered yet the camera man is right in tow. Who are these super-cameramen?

All reality shows are scripted. They don't waste expensive film on who-knows-what. They manufacture all the drama. That's why you see former soap opera actresses on "real housewives," etc.

Regarding Moonshiners I came across this article last year when I had similar questions.

Correct. Reality TV is not reality TV.
