Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles told the Times-Union tonight he had “no idea” offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch was going to be fired until coach Gus Bradley called him this morning.


“I took the mindset [Monday] that Jedd was going to be my offensive coordinator next year,” Bortles said in a phone interview.


Bortles said he and Fisch had an “awesome” relationship. A player said recently he sensed a disconnect between quarterback and coordinator and more specifically, how Fisch coached Bortles during practice.


“I told Jedd from Day One that I wanted him to coach me hard and that was what I was accustomed to from playing for George O’Leary at UCF,” Bortles said. “Jedd treated me very fairly and when we did have disagreements, we were able to talk through them, work things out and get a solution or compromise.”



Bortles said he “definitely” hopes the new coordinator retains Frank Scelfo as the quarterbacks coach.


“I love Frank and I thought me, Frank, Jedd, Chad [Henne] and Stephen [Morris] all had a great relationship,” Bortles said. “I hope Frank gets to stay and I get to continue working with him.”


Bortles has already started embracing the task of learning the new offense (when the new coordinator gives him the playbook) and then helping his teammates during the transition.


“It’s something I look forward to, the challenge of saying, ‘Here’s your second offense in two years – now go learn it,’” Bortles said. “I look forward to meeting who they hire, learning the offense and then being the best teacher I can for the other guys and answering any of their questions.”

Glad he seems up to the challenge of learning a new offense, most on here seemed to think consistency is good, even if it means being consistently bad.

It is critical this offseason that Bortles hurdles this huge challenge of learning another offense AND take another step forward in his development. If he does this, I think we all might have an extended 2015 season.

Kind of. Gabbert said all the things that he was taught to say. His canned responses never felt genuine. Blake seems to be more transparent and have a bit of a personality relative to Blaine.

I sense as much enthusiasm in Bortles as I do when I hear Bradley talk... although Bradley talks with more energy and is a little bit more persuasive and contageous

Blake is such a great kid, seems to be a very down to earth kid who wants to get better, and i think he got better as he played more. I do feel bad for the kid as he will have a new O cord and possibly QB coach, but i think Blake will value a new style and will adjust. All good QB'S learn new styles and Blake will be just fine.

 

As far as Gabbert what a bum, Bortles is light years ahead of Blaine.

Yeah that is one thing that I do really like about Blake. He's real. Blaine said all the right things, but it all sounds pre-packaged. In a way, Blaine was a lot like JDR in the way he talks, whereas Blake is a lot like Gus.

Until he gets a new play book, Bortles has an off season plan for mechanical work.  He isn't waiting on a "late" draft this year.  Even though the CBA restricts coaching opportunities, he has a work out schedule and the mindset to get better.  This offense is so bad that getting a coach that just wants to run a Veer would be a step up.  Nice to see them pushing some more chips to the center of the table.  The organization set the offense up for failure honestly so they really need to learn and work harder for success.

Well, they are reporting what their sources told them, which...if you take what Blake said, he didn't deny. While its possible Blake asked for a tough love approach, from the outside looking in (and no knowledge of this "agreement"), it would appear as though he was belittling him.

 

I think there's some players in that locker room who didn't like Fisch.

that's just it though.  it's unfortunate that some of the players misinterpreted what was going on.  Fisch has been bad mouthed all over the papers for something he was asked to do.

I don't know though...you can be hard on someone (stern) without belittling them. Most decent parents do it on the regular with their children, for example.

 

I think it does reinforce that some of the players didn't like Jedd, but its also entirely possible that this secret squirrel arrangement between Bortles and Fisch contributed greatly to them not liking him.

From the point of view that, logically, changing the playbook would tend to delay the offense from learning those plays... then yes, consistency is a good thing. No one here wanted the team to be consistently bad. It should be understood though that part of this teams 'badness' was the result of players not knowing the playbook as well as they would've after a couple of years. Obviously, that wasn't the whole problem; but, on the offense it was part of the problem.

 

We have no reason to expect that these players won't once again have similar struggles with learning a new offense again this season. Even if the play calling is better, if the execution isn't up to speed we can't realistically expect dynamically different results on offense than what we saw this season... unless of course there is an unexpected quantum leap in the improvement of our offensive line. 

 

I've no doubt that fisch wasn't the 'best' OC, but I hope we didn't just 'throw out the baby with the dish water'...
