Firing Mallory?
|
Before the offseason began, I figured Mallory and the ST coaches would be let go and that's about it...and today we find out Fisch got the boot (which I'm not toally against FWIW, just worried about BB learning a new offense). Now does this mean that Mallory is safe for another year? I can't remember a ST unit that made so many game changing blunders. It's one thing to have an average return/coverage game, but it's another to consistently have punts and kicks blocked at an alarming rate. Anyone heard anything about his fate?

They would have announced it with Fisch's firing IMO. I think his blocking schemes need a real hard look. Shore that up and he really is pretty decent. He was also working with a TON of rookies.
I dont blame all of the struggles on Mallory its a very young group, and they are gonna make mistakes no matter who the coach is.

They asked Gus if there are other moves for the staff and he said no. The only exception he said is that if a new OC comes in and wants to bring in his own guys. This of course doesn't/shouldn't affect the ST unit.
We needed another thread for this? Why don't you fire brigade guys/gals get together at Starbucks and create one big fire/cut this person thread and be done with.

He had a few trick plays that worked. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
I feel for Scobee this year. He didn't do so well. I think his 53 yarder he had Sunday was his best kick all year. Besides that his kicks either were blocked or misses.

Quote:I think you blame the line for the blocksIt was still an overall bad year for him. I didn't say it was his fault. ![]()

The number of blocked kicks is alarming. This year is the first in his career he had multiple kicks blocked. Most years none of his kicks were blocked. One of the blocked kicks was a game-winning attempt. This year also was the second time Bryan Anger had a punt blocked. Ace Sanders had nowhere to run on many punt returns. Speicial teams sucked all over and Mike Mallory has to get the blame for that. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
Quote:I think you blame the line for the blocksTo be sure, the line whiffed on blocks that allowed some of the blocks. However, it was also pointed out that some of Scobee's kicks were way lower than they should be which facilitated them getting blocked. Yes, the line was bad, but Mr. free firehouse sub wasn't faultless either.
I y'ams who I y'ams and thats all I y'ams...
Quote:I think you blame the line for the blocksYeah, but there are three key factors there: 1. I believe (could be wrong) that the majority of the "line" on punts is made up of linebackers, making the responsibility to teach them how to block for punts solely that of the ST coach. 2. The OL coach teaches his players how to block on offensive plays. The ST coach teaches them how to block for field goals and punts. 3. Ultimately, blocked kicks and a miserable punt return average fall on the ST coach. If the Jaguars lose games next year on special teams blunders, count me in the "I told you so" brigade. If special teams make a sudden turnaround with more experience on the units and Mallory proves to be a decent coach after all, I'll eat my words.

Quote:I'm surprised Mallory kept his job. Special teams were a disaster. Me too. He should have been fired the same day.
This is the one guy I really thought was gone. Didnt think he'd make it out.
Special teams was a constant revolving door of players most of the year.
That has to be considered. |
