The myth that is "building through the draft"
|
What people fail to grasp is that in the nfl you are supposed to put together a quality product every year. Because people are paying for it. "Youth and inexperience" should not be an excuse. We went this route for whatever reason, and so far we arent seeing any results.
The good teams didnt get good by "building through the draft". That's a huge myth. The good teams got good by lucking into a game changing signal caller. The packers? They TRADED for brett favre. Lucked into Rodgers late in the first round. Ted thompson has been abysmal at drafting non-skill position players. The colts made a 50/50 call on manning vs leaf, guessed right. Then they tanked for the surest thing at the position in a generation. I think we all know how awful grigson is at evaluating talent. The pats? Boy are they fortunate brady turned out to be the greatest late round pick in history. And they never seem to get quality play out of all those picks they collect. They arent shy about spending in FA. Denver literally bought a super bowl caliber team. Seattle acquired Lynch from the bills, and tried to address qb in many ways before stumbling into russell wilson. They were mediocre before that, regardless of who was under center. Quote:All these teams you mentioned also drafted a bunch of pro bowl players on both sides of the ball to go along with their QBs so I'm not sure what your point is. Ummm... What pro bowlers are currently on the colts roster? And which pro bowlers on the pats' roster were actually drafted by the team? Not that the pro bowl means anything honestly. The point is that the "build through the draft" crap means literally nothing if bortles doesnt pan out
I think oakland might want their fee back on your team building advice
building through the draft is the wsy to get a core group of young players that could stay with your team for 10 years you then build around them its not pretty or quick but its the way to long term success
Outside of the seahawks, none of the other teams has been drafting well recently. Therefore "build through the draft" is BS. It's all about finding the qb and then whatever happens happens

Quote:I think oakland might want their fee back on your team building advice There is NO such thing as building through the draft. All that matters is getting the right qb, then how you build the rest of the team is completely irrelevant
This seems to be an anti build threw the draft thread, but what the OP doesn't seem to realize is both Caldwell and Shad Khan have recently stated that we will be very heavy in free agency this off season. Implying build threw the draft is now an out dated ideology for this team.
Quote:Ummm... What pro bowlers are currently on the colts roster? And which pro bowlers on the pats' roster were actually drafted by the team? He's nothing at this point but a failing game manager on a team that needs a star at the position. We'll be lucky if he even turns into an Alex Smith to be honest. You don't take projects or a person who needs to develop on the bench as high as 3rd in the draft. That should be a ready to contribute potential all pro selection. Joeckel and Bortles don't look the part and that's tough to swallow. Quote:Ummm... What pro bowlers are currently on the colts roster? And which pro bowlers on the pats' roster were actually drafted by the team? All 3 of the colts pro bowlers were drafted by them, and if you go back to the Manning era, pretty much all of their pro bowlers they had then were drafted by them. All 3 of the pats pro bowlers last year were drafted by them and 5 of their 6 the year before were drafted by them. I don't think you thought your argument through very well. Give me names. Because pro bowl participant means next to nothing in most cases. Jeff saturday made it as a packer 2 years ago. So um, yeah.
Im gonna get slammed for this, but the roster under gene smith was good enough to get 7 or 8 wins with garrard at the helm. Not a chance garrard wins that many games with this team.
NOT saying gene was competent at all because it's his fault we never found a pass rush or an above average qb. But i dont think you can say that his rosters were any worse than this. Again: it all comes back to the qb Quote:Give me names. Because pro bowl participant means next to nothing in most cases. Jeff saturday made it as a packer 2 years ago. We had Fred Taylor and Maurice Jones Drew carrying the team. Add in a decent defense, and we maintained a high time of possession which means the other teams defense was tired. That wasn't Garrard. Edit: I'm sorry, did we not build through the draft at that time? Were our star RBs not drafted? Quote:Im gonna get slammed for this, but the roster under gene smith was good enough to get 7 or 8 wins with garrard at the helm. Smith, after 4 years of building his roster, had created a 2-14 Juggernaut. Quote:Coughlin and Harris were responsible for most of the roster that got 7 or 8 wins. We draft. The problem is, we don't build. It has been clear these coaches are over their heads. Will Khan see it before its too late? We shall see..

Quote:Caldwell dumped Smith's roster and still won twice as many games in his first year. Im sorry, what? Gus won 4 games. Mularkey only won 2, but gene smith has more wins to his name prior to that final season. |
