Duke Johnson

Guy played out of his mind last night.  With the Jedd connection and the recent acquisition of several UM players, along with a need at RB, I wouldn't be the least bit suprised to see this guy in teal next year.

Thoughts?

I don't really think running back is really much of a need at all

Disagree completely!  There's not a single proven back on the squad.  DRob had a nice game, but that's one game against a team very poor against the run.  We will add a RB next year, no doubt about it.

If you want a proven back, the draft isn't the place to get one.

We either give the guys we have time to shine or get one in free agency.

I don't see the team spending anything more than a 4th or maybe a 5th on a rb while we have guys like d rob and storm who are jars on the shelf that have a foot in the door.

You constantly want to upgrade all parts of your roster, and RB is in need of upgrade.

Duke>>>>DRob, Storm, Toby, Todman.

Why do we need a RB in the first 2 rounds? Is my initial thought

2nd thought: Why not give Denard a fair shake at RB before deciding we need to draft Duke Johnson?

Well first, i never said in the first 2 rounds.  Second, i'd love to give Denard his shot and hope he's successful.  I just think a talent like Duke won't be overlooked, and with Jedd here, i could see it happening.  That's my guess.

Before Jedd, canes were never drafted here.  Since he's arrived, we've seen a little influx.  Just an observation.

When you're 29th in the league in rushing, and your QB is your second leading rusher, you have a need.  I recognize the need for the Oline to play better, but i still think the team needs more talent at the position.

Realistically where do you think Duke Johnson will be drafted?

3rd or 4th.

I'd jump all over it in the 4th.  In the 3rd?  I think the team has bigger needs at more important positions.

This class is loaded with RBs from what I hear, could get starting caliber player like Duke in the 4th round or later.

If we could get Duke in the 4th round I'd be ecstatic.

If we take an RB anywhere in the top 2 rounds, it better be Gurley.. That said, we still need to go defense and o-line..

I'd rather wait until round 5 and select Dominique Brown from Louisville

Of course you do, but there are parts that are in more need or are just more imperative to success.

In my opinion, right now running back isn't one of those.

Also there is no way of saying that duke is better than those guys. Have you seen duke play some NFL games?

Sure he looks like a stud in college but how many times does it not translate? Too many in my opinion to spend a high round pick on him.

And d rob and storm have had ONE start each....

So after all of that, we're basically in agreement with not taking a rb before the fourth....

Duke's a freak.  I remember watching him play for Norland HS in the FL State Championship game.  He scored 5 TDs in their win.   The runner-up Wakulla beat our HS (Ponte Vedra) in the Quarter finals so I didn't feel so bad because there was no way PV would have beaten Norland HS.

How would you describe Duke in style ? I've not seen him, but sounds a lot like DRob in style ? (Quick and nimble rather than powerful) Or is that a bad comparison ?

I agree that running back isn't our main priority, but at this stage it sounds like this will be a good year to draft running backs because there a lot of good ones around. (just as there was a glut of receivers in the last draft). So we would be daft to avoid them altogether.
