A stunner: Chargers plan to announce as early as Thursday they are moving to LA, ending 55-year stint with SD, league sources tell ESPN.

Back when I lived in SD, almost a decade ago, the Chargers were talking about leaving town because their stadium was ancient, falling apart, in dire need of replacement, impossible to sell luxury seats in, in a terrible location, not viable for hosting Super Bowls in a city tailor made for them, etc. Take your pick. A die-hard Charger fan I knew out there once said to me that he hoped the Chargers ended up moving to LA, because that would at least make for a short trip on game day.

Guess he got his wish. Schefter's usually pretty accurate.

I'm wondering if this is a negotiating ploy by Dean Spanos to get San Diego ( city and county ) and/ or the NFL to up their contribution amounts for a new stadium in San Diego? The NFL seems hesitant about having a 2nd team in Los Angeles in the foreseeable future and this is something Spanos might be banking on in a last ditch effort for the league to pony up more.

Loooos Angeles Super Chargers!

What a shame. LA can't even support 1 team. It is going to be a disaster.

The one positive to this is that this could be the end of the line of billionaires bullying tax payers for stadium money.

You mean San Diego? Unless Khan is willing to foot the bill for the stadium, I don't see that happening.

Tomorrow, the Mayor of San Diego is expected to make the State of the City address. If the Chargers do indeed announce the move to Los Angeles tomorrow, that's going to be the most anticipated State of the City address in the history of the country.

I'm glad this means an end to the Jaguars to Los Angeles talk, but I hate franchise relocations.

If I had my way, the Rams never would have left Los Angeles (though I know they left Cleveland), the Browns never would have left Cleveland, the Colts would have stayed in Baltimore, Houston would have kept the Oilers, the Cardinals would have remained in St. Louis (though I know they moved from Chicago), and the Raiders would have stayed in Oakland.

Worst to 1st. Curse Reversed!

Ratings in LA were lower for Rams games this season than they were the previous season when LA didn't even have a team. The Rams have their share of fans but the overwhelming majority of people in LA that are NFL fans have other rooting interests.

The Raiders by far are the most popular team not only in LA but in Southern California as a whole but they are apparently not going to end up in LA.

The NFL screwed up big time with the entire relocation process in the last few seasons. On multiple fronts, including letting the Rams leave St. Louis despite a stadium proposal that was approved by both St. Louis and the state of Missouri.

They go from an ancient falling apart stadium to no stadium? I realize that stadium has been in dire need of replacement since the 90sbut when do the owners become accountable for those costs? Seems it's all about the tax payers paying for them

Raiders now get 2 home games against a division rival, assuming they don't move to Vegas.

If the NFL fans in LA were polled, my guess is at least half would prefer no teams in the market, with no restrictions in getting the best NFL games on over the air TV.

So just read Chargers and Rams will have a $2.6 Billion stadium. Wow

What does a 2.6B stadium do exactly that a 1B stadium doesn't do?

That was even the case this season when 85 % of the people that showed up for the Raiders-Chargers game in SD were Raiders fans.

Spanos had planned to talk to his staff before making announcement, so there is some extremely remote chance he could change his mind.

................

The only thing that's going to change Dean Spanos' mind is a better financial package, which would increase the chances of San Diego voters approving a proposal on the 2018 ballot.
