Blackouts no more

The FCC has officially dumped the blackout rule.

Quote:“This is a historic day for sports fans,” Sports Fans Coalition chairman David Goodriend said in a release. “Since 1975, the federal government has propped up the NFL’s obnoxious practice of blacking out a game from local TV if the stadium did not sell out. Today’s FCC action makes clear: if leagues want to mistreat fans, they will have to do so without Uncle Sam’s help.”
How do you expect this change to effect the NFL in its fight to entice the fan who prefers the man cave over the stadium experience?
"Before you criticize a man, walk a mile in his shoes. That way, if he gets angry, he's a mile away and barefoot."

Won't change attendance at all, and will finally create downward pressure on ticket prices that's been badly needed.

I guess some teams need to finally learn how to win games and draw more people off the couch..

They could still make a deal with networks to enforce blackout. They just cannot force the network to do so. Word is they already have arrangements with CBS, Fox, and others.

The NFL will have to give something up for that, though, so this will affect the league's bottom line. Networks will say "you can have blackouts, but every time a game is blacked out we want a refund on that part of the broadcast deal cost" or such.

The last sentence is funny:

If the bill introduced last year becomes law, blackouts immediately will go the way of the dodo bird, the dropkick, and Tom Brady’s talent.

It'll be interesting to see if the league forces the issue here.

Finances, health, or unavoidable situations aside, I just can't see why someone would choose to watch a game on TV, even a large HDTV, rather than go to a game. I mean, you're there, part of the experience and the fun that's being broadcast.

When the team is competitive it's great being at the stadium.

I can say with all honesty, though, that over the last few years there were many times I left the stadium wondering why I even bothered to show up, and having a rather sick feeling in the pit of my stomach that wasn't from the stadium hotdogs.

How about the weather? There is no way I can have fun at a game when it is 90 degrees or raining because we play outdoors.

That wouldn't be real smart on their part. JMO.

What lies behind us, and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.

Well when your team is down 28-3 by halftime I can understand not wanting to go to the game.

The first two and a half games, Chad Henne was the quarterback. That is a big reason we got blown out from halftime at Philadelphia to halftime against the Colts. Now people want to watch the rookie who was drafted to be our long-term franchise quarterback and already has shown us what he can do. So I don't think attendance will go down just because of four double-digit losses.

My guess is that if the government decides to intervene further with legislation forcing the league to scrap blackouts, you'll see the league explore options beyond free over the air television. I could see the league going to some sort of Pay Per View option for a lot of their games.

The UFC has done this for a portion of their fights, and there has been a relative fan revolt.

I would not pay to watch the NFL....they are making more than enough money to play it over free public television.

Greed will kill the fan support.

It hasn't killed fan support yet. If there's a way to charge for the broadcast, don't think it's not being explored by the league. There are clearly enough people out there willing to pay for the privilege of watching games. Look at what DirecTV just ponied up to renew their hold over the ticket. $1.4 billion annually? They're still making money.
