Blake Bortles (22) also started his first game, and his 29-for-37 (78.4%) day at San Diego was the most accurate quarterback debut in NFL history. He knew when to take off too (five rushes, 24 yards). Later today, Greg Bedard, who watched Bridgewater and Bortles on Sunday, will grade their debuts here at The MMQB.

Drew Brees in fact did have a better completion percentage in his starting debut.  His first game was only 55%, but he only played 2.1 quarters.  Though he also only had 19 passes.

 

Rodgers had 81% in his first start.  However, he played 2.6 quarters of a game before that.  


Still, neither of them started a game in their first year.

From what you're saying here it seems the qualifier was left out of the article about it being a rookie in their debut, and not just debut in general.

I was excited about Gabbert initially too because he had all the physical tools. But in watching him play it never really added up (although he would show a flash from time to time). Bortles also has all the physical tools but when you watch him, it's so obviously different. That is what I guess they call the infamous "It Factor". ;-)

Yeah I think with Blaine I was just excited we finally drafted a top 10 (at the time) QB! I held strong to my hopes for a while, looking for almost anything. Blake's definitely nothing like him! I'm very excited about him and so happy we picked him.
