Rookie QBs making their first start

#1

Just thought I'd throw out some historical context.

When we look back on Gabbert and Leftwich, we remember parts of their entire careers.  If we try to remember how we felt about their first game, memories of other games will clutter up the picture.

So, unless we can find the original footage, all we really have are these stats.

And the stats aren't a good measure because they don't say how difficult the opponent was, or how good or bad the supporting cast was.

None the less, here they are.

How do y'all feel after looking at these numbers?

David Garrard

Week 17, 2002

13/26 (50%), 135 yds (5.2 YPA), 0 TD, 0 INT, 3 Sacks

Byron Leftwich

Week 4, 2003

17/36 (47%), 231 yds (6.4 YPA), 1 TD, 3 INT, 0 Sacks

Blaine Gabbert

Week 3, 2011

12/21 (57%), 139 yds (6.6 YPA), 1 TD, 1 INT, 2 Sacks

Blake Bortles

Week 4, 2014

29/37 (78%), 253 yds (6.8 YPA), 1 TD, 2 INT, 3 Sacks

My fellow southpaw Mark Brunell will probably always be my favorite Jaguar.

Should have been 2 TD's if Hurns catches the ball cleanly.  But he just set an NFL record and a team record.  Most yards by a rookie QB in his first start (that's the Jags team record), and highest completion percentage for a rookie QB's first start ever (that's the NFL record).  I'd say he did pretty well for himself, and the other guys don't compare.

Gabberts first start was the rain game!

His competition percentage ended up being the highest ever in a rookie's first start.

I loved that game cause in my eyes thats what Cam Newton actually plays like. Any thing else he's done has been good luck.

Yeah Bortles yards and completion percentage were impressive yesterday.

I wonder if the Jags with Gabbert would have put up a lot more yards if it wasn't raining so much that day in Charlotte.

I know for a fact he did better than Aikman in his first start.  Of course you can argue the Saints of 1989 were a much stronger defense than what Bortles faced yesterday, to say nothing of the different rules.
