What if BYU goes undefeated
|
The obvious answer is it depends on what the landscape looks like as far as the resumes of the top teams..... But if BYU goes undefeated, should they be included in the playoff with that schedule?
In their defense, that schedule probably looked harder on paper when they signed up for all these games. Texas is down. Boise St is good but still down from years past. UConn hasnt elevated to the level many thought they would a few years ago. Cal has obviously been really down for 3 or 4 years now. Houston isnt quite the same team they were from a couple years ago when they won 13 games and blasted Penn St in their bowl game(that was Kevin Sumlin's last game there). UCF is on the schedule and they may be better than what you thought when BYU agreed to play them. But UCF still doesnt generate the same respect a bigger name school would. Virginia is on the schedule and they may be tougher than you think but again, no respect for that game. The rest of the schedule is meh. So far they've won at UConn and at Texas. Both blowouts. Will be interesting to see how they play the rest of the way. I do think they have a legit shot at going undefeated. But I think they would need to win in blowout fashion in most if not all of those games to have a shot at the playoffs. ________________________________________________ Scouting well is all that matters. Interesting thought. My guess is they are in the top 4 in the polls. But the committee is a such an unknown.

Saying all this watch them go out tonight and lose to Houston

Quote:Saying all this watch them go out tonight and lose to Houston I would be surprised. Houston is really bad.
BYU needs to hope and pray Texas improves and runs the table. Texas is terrible. I watched a quarter of that game last weekend in disbelief. The UCF loss to Penn State didn't help either. The Pac12 looks strong this year so I'm thinking they or the SEC gets the benefit of having 2 teams go. If that happens, BYU is out. BYU needs the following:
* Win every game * UCF win the AAC * Texas beat Oklahoma * SEC beat each other so Bama, Auburn, LSU / SC, GA, UF all have 2 losses. * PAC12 see above - beat each other USC, Oregon, Stanford, AZ State * Michigan State and Ohio State lose another game We show less advertisements to registered users. Even in a win last night, I think the "close game" vs Houston actually hurt them.
Yea I think close wins will hurt them. They jumped out to a decent lead early on. But then Houston made it close and BYU could never pull away.

Hard to say with a committee using vague criteria for the first time, but I think they get in if undefeated. They'll have beaten teams from many of the major conferences and the committee will likely feel they've earned the chance to prove themselves against the top competition. Also, look at the makeup of the committee and you see several tie-ins with minor conferences and schools. Looking at the SEC tie-ins they're drastically outnumbered by everyone else. Unless it's a clear case that two teams from one conference are among the best, I don't expect them to both be selected with the way committees typically work.
If a close wins hurts BYU in an undefeated season, that sucks, but could be reality. Just proves that more than a four playoff format is needed.

Personally I think the BCS did a good job of picking out the best teams. The only bad part is that it could only pick two. If I had the power, (which fortunately for most of you I don't), I would have a six team playoff. The problem with going over 4 under the current system is that fan bases won't travel to neutral sites week after week. I'd seed them 1-6 and then 1-2 would get a bye, 3-4 would host the first round, and 1-2 would host the second round. Just like the NFL the drama stays high because the seeding really matters. Attendance wouldn't fall because they would be at the playoff teams' stadiums.
The revenue sharing for the home playoff games would have to be worked out for the conferences of all playoff members, but I think it would lead to a better product with attendance being high and passionate and TV ratings through the roof.
That's why only the national title game is a set location (maybe even semis). Schools would host before that.
