Simple facts

(This post was last modified: 09-08-2014, 01:42 PM by Xenochrony.)

When it was half way through the second quarter I knew the Eagles were going to come back.

1. Very potent offense.

2. Henne isn't our guy.

3. Jaguars are a young team.

How was this not expected? Was this not clear at the start of the season? Hey, it was exciting seeing those early 17 points go up. But to think we still had a chance when we hardly converted 3rd downs, it was just so obvious how the outcome this game was going to have.

4. No run game.

5. Henne second guessing himself (using up our times out).

6. Taking so many shots down field(not entirely bad, but those attacks looked formed out of desparation).

What I'm confused about with this board is, why did anyone think we weren't going to have an ugly game?

Again,

7. Second youngest team in the league.

8. Henne.

9. Second year head coach.(Not an excuse here, but really this team is slowly starting to gel, it's not there yet, but it's getting there).

But here is the silver lining.

10. Dline looks really good. Enough to keep us in the game.

11. The dline is making our secondary look like veterans.

12. They're getting to the QB very effeciently. Key players are making other players look good.

We had some questions about our dline, some were certain it was going to be good, some were not and others on the fence. Right now, they are good. Yes it may be too early to tell and unless our offense can move those chains the defense is going to be working over time until next season but, as of right now our D can and will present problems.

13. Our defense is hard and it all starts with in the trenches.

14. Our defense is fast. I can't remember the last time I was excited about our defense. These guys play like piercing arrows.

15. Take away that hurry up play that Sproles ran up the gut and we contained a very potent run game for 3 1/2 quarters. It all starts with the front four and they did a good job.

These are mostly positives. Henne is the common denominator and he had some moments were if the WR pulled in the pass would have extended the drive. So give it time to gel. Henne looked somewhat sharp today. I distinctly remember one time he used a time out in the second half and I just called him an idiot. But he saw something. He made a safe call for one, giving our defense more time off the field and second, he converted the third down. He is a game manager. He does just enough and really that's what we should be expecting from him and that's ok. He made me eat my own words. He may not have the "it" factor, but he certainly belongs in the NFL. Maybe not as a franchise QB but, certainly as a guy you can rely on temporarily. Hey flame me for that all you want. I want Bortles in there as much as anyone but, I stand behind whatever QB we have starting. Right now, I'm enjoying the positive things this team is showing and that is the defense and other things like, Hurns. Who? Exactly!

Don't think I have ever heard the word "sharp" to describe Henne. Kudos.

It may appear like a stretch but I did say somewhat sharp, and really those two touch downs could have been stalled drives. Realistically, he quieted that entire stadium in 3 plays. TD 1, TD 2, and Hurns along the sideline pitted against our end zone. "Sharp" on those drives fits.

As mediocre as Henne is, he didn't get any help from the offensive line. Whiffed blocks on pass protection (yeah, I'm looking at you, McLendon) and poor run blocking in our ZBS made Henne look more mediocre than he really is. That said, Henne looked lost in the 2nd half, when he wasn't running for his life. Poor clock management (could be some fault of the coaching staff here), poor decision making, and overthrows (like the one to Marcedes on 4th down) hurt this team.

At this point, I'd like to see Bortles play, but that wouldn't be a good idea considering the lack of consistency on the offensive line. Let them jell, then put the kid in...

I don't remember hearing Luke Joeckel's name during the game.  I'd say that is another positive....

Our special teams was not very good as well. Anger is the worst.

I forgot to mention the oline, but it's pretty much considered the white elephant in the room. But yeah, pass blocking looked decent.

I didn't feel special teams was much of a problem, what looked bad about it?

One of Hurns' catches was a bail out for Henne. He threw it behind and Hurns adjusted and made a heckuva catch for a TD.

It could have easily been a typical Jags play and we woulda settled for 3 there....

and then lost by 20

Missed FG, blocked FG, mutliple punt returns allowed...

The Oline has pass protected better this season (preseason and game 1) than it had last year. Not terrific but not terrible. They are still getting no run blocking going.

ST was a problem? If so I didn't notice. Anger can't be expected to put them behind the 20 when he's kicking from his own 15 or EZ.

missed FG was just a long FG that Scobee usually hits but isn't a guarantee. Shouldn't count that against the STs.

Blocked FG was definitely on ST line...

See above for response to PRs. Also should note, Sproles is pretty good.

Just because Sproles is good, doesn't mean we shouldn't be expected to stop him, or have a game plan to neutralize him.  2 punt returns of 20+ yards in a row are unacceptable.  Either poor plan, or poor execution.  We were playing from behind in terms of field position for the entire 2nd half.  That has a lot to do with offense, but the Special Teams certainly didn't help.

Having someone average 15 yards a punt return is terrible. Anger was basically out kicking his coverage. Scobee needs to be automatic because we don't get many scoring opportunities.

With you on these points for sure. That's how I was feeling about it.

I was working - but had the ESPN gamecast on my phone sitting in front of me. A Co-worker noticed the 17-0 score and remarked in surprise.  I siad, "don't worry, it'll be 17-21 in no time.  Our defense is playing over their heads and our offense won't keep this up unless they can run the ball. Our TDs are from turnovers. That won't keep up the whole game."

Gonna respond to this in response below.

I do feel you both are right about this. Anger should be placing the punts properly and not just booming the kicks. He had some really nice distance on a few of those that allowed us to regain field position. But then there were the times he placed it nicely into Sproles hands and left him with good positioning.

Blocked FG's are bad. I can't believe that happened. With those missed opportunities it was looking really bad for the Jags even though they had a 17-0 lead.

I think this is a very logical outlook. Wish more people had the same.
