Denard like Percy

#1

Hey, everybody! Football again, I'm sure everyone is as psyched as I am.

Anyone, think Denard could be as effective as Harvin one day? I'm sure a lot of it is Russell Wilson. I mean that, of course Denard couldn't be that effective when there was no passing game to speak of. But eventually when Bortles plays and the Jags actually throw the ball down field, there might actually be some space. When that happens, I think, Denard could very well become a similar type player. I think, he has that rare speed too. Not sure Denard will ever be as good catching the ball, but I'm sure he can catch well enough to be an OW one day. Anyway, just a thought.

Go Jags!

he's fast but I think his lack of ability to catch will stop him ever being a dynamic player like Harvin IMO

Mostly I was thinking of that "Jet play" I think they called it where the back field is empty but then Percy cuts across, that seems like a pure speed play, I think Denard could pull it off. Just can't wait to see that guy in space with the ball.

He struggled with the dropsies last year quite a bit, but he's been much more sure handed this preseason and through camp. His hand injury last year really affected his ability to catch.

I think we'll see a Percy-like plan in the works for Shoelace. I don't think he has Percy's raw talent, but he can be utilized much the same way.

I think that's the plan not sure if it'll work but I think that's how Gus and fisch want to use him.

Shoelace is quick, he's explosive, but he's not a natural receiver or runningback at this time. Harvin had the benefit of playing that dynamic/dual role at UF. It's not to say that Shoelace couldn't develop into that type of role. But it's only his second year. He'll be a good runningback his year if Gearhart can wear down the opposing defense early on. He'll get a chance to make some long gains on stretch, trap, and pitch run designs this season.

Intresting analysis:

Caldrac I agree that Percy had the advantage of the Dynamic Duo, but more importantly the level of talent on those years Harvin played was phenominal, many, many of those are active in the NFL shoot they even made Timmy look invincible.I can see Harvin like plays in the plans as the OLine and DRob mature.

It would be greay to have a two back field with two wideouts that Defensive Cordinators would look at and say I have no answer for this.

Harvin is one of the most talented players on whatever field he's on. Been that way since high school for him. DRob is a second string RB. I have high hopes for some big plays but he's no Percy.

At this point in his career I don't think he has the ability to make the quick reads and make defensive players miss in the open field like Harvin.

Maybe next year. Huge fan of Denard and he's got great athleticism he just needs to get to the point where being a RB/receiving option is 2nd nature to him

I don't see it. Denard is a different type of player. He could be great in his own way if he develops his other skill sets.

Maybe their play can be similar out of the backfield but Robinson isn't anywhere near as fast as harvin and I don't really see him becoming a very good receiver.
Coughlin when asked if winning will be a focus: "What the hell else is there? This is nice and dandy, but winning is what all this is about."

The Seahawks are good at getting Harvin into space to make plays. That's what we need to do with Robinson. That being said Harvin is in a league of his own.

I don't think he'll be quite as effective as Harvin, but they'll use him in a somewhat similar role.

I think his portion of the playbook will evolve as his receiving ability does, but for now it will largely be running plays with minimal receiving involved.

I don't like the comparison - but it's the most obvious one I guess. D-Rob has his own evolving skill set - and Fisch will tailor his playbook to use it most effectively. So Denard is like Denard more than "Denard like Percy."

Denard like Percy? Or Denard IS like Percy? Do the Jags have their own Michael Sam?

Wow, I didn't know Harvin was put on such a pedestal is that just because of Thursday night? I don't see some great exceptional football player, I just see a player with a tremendous amount of speed. It's not like the guy has incredible vision and finds holes through a crowd, he doesn't make cuts or change direction like Sanders, he doesn't make incredibley acrobatic catches. I can't remember him laying out or going up for balls. I just see a guy who runs away and by people. He's also missed several games, maybe he just did that while playing for the vikings because he didn't want to be there.

Go Jags!

Where have you been while the Jaguars made him a full-time running back? Denard is only listed as a WR on the roster because he wanted to wear his college number -which, under NFL rules, cannot be worn by running backs. We have a whole thread about that.

Percy Harvin has always been a wide receiver and punt returner in the NFL. In college he split time with Jeff Demps. Denard Robinson was a quarterback who knew while recovering from a right shoulder injury he would have to change positions in the NFL.

So why are you trying to compare two guys who have always played different positions?
