Recap of today's training camp practice, which was attended by 1,652 fans:


PLAYER ATTENDANCE


Physically unable to perform: Cornerback Alan Ball (ankle) and linebacker Dekoda Watson (groin).


Non-football injury: Cornerback Aaron Colvin (knee), linebacker John Lotulelei (hamstring) and receiver Ace Sanders (personal).


Limited work: Safety Josh Evans (ankle), defensive end Andre Branch (undisclosed).


NEW INJURIES


*Receiver Cecil Shorts was pulled from practice because of tightness in his hamstring.


TOP PLAY


During the first segment of 11-on-11 play, back-up middle linebacker Nate Stupar intercepted Blake Bortles’ pass intended for tight end Marcedes Lewis down the right seam. Stupar jumped to make the catch and was able to corral it as he hit the field.


QB STATS


*Chad Henne – 18 snaps, 8-of-9 passing; Bortles 17 snaps, 5-of-9 passing, one interception; Stephen Morris eight snaps, 2-of-6 passing; and Ricky Stanzi, nine snaps, 3-of-6 passing, one interception.


THUMBS UP


*Cornerback Jamell Fleming intercepted Stanzi when the receiver got jammed off his route by a linebacker and later had a pass break-up.


*Receiver Allen Robinson made a diving down-field catch on a pass thrown by Chad Henne.


*The tempo. Coach Gus Bradley organized a practice that included several sections of no-huddle play to test the players’ conditioning there appeared to be no issues with cramps.


THUMBS DOWN


*Shorts’ 2013 preseason was derailed by a strained calf and he was limited throughout the off-season program because of a similar injury. And today, he was held out of practice at the end with the hamstring problem.


*Probably typical of the first day, there were too many penalties for Bradley’s liking.


*The post-practice kick-off. It wasn’t a competition. Fulham player Hugo Rodallega drilled a field goal attempt, then that was it.

The Good


Football is back. Not much really stood out in particular for the Jaguars on the first day of practice, which was to be expected. There were a few individuals who stood out to me however, though I did miss a chunk of practice sitting in with Mike Dempsey on Jaguars Today on 1010XL.


There were three players however who stood out to me in one way or another. Rookie receivers Allen Robinson and Damien Copeland flashed in individual and team drills. Copeland is a shifty slot receiver who did a good job working the middle of the field and the sidelines, making some nice grabs. Robinson also looked good on Friday, one play in particular where he laid out for a deep ball from Chad Henne and hauled in the catch.


On the defensive side of the ball, second-year defensive linemanAbry Jones flashed in one-on-one drills man handling some of the offensive line, albeit without pads are full "contact". Jones was an undrafted player that stood out to me last season and it looks like he's added weight and could be in competition for the one-technique role.


The Bad


No one was particularly bad on Friday, but some had their struggles. Rookie receiver Marqise Lee had some drops in drills, but that's not all that shocking if you watched his college career. Blake Bortles also had a few ducks, but that's to be expected early on.


"I think he was pretty good. Here’s what I appreciate about where Blake was. I saw him take some risks," Bradley said after practice. "He threw an interception in practice and came back and threw a seam route with two guys on him and he put it right between them. He made a great throw. That tells me something right there. He has no fear of failure and that’s a really cool sign for a quarterback. We are going to make some mistakes and I have said that before, it’s how you respond to it. I really saw first-hand that competitive spirit."


The Jaguars are breaking down his mechanics and building them from his footwork back up, which is what they need to do, so it's effecting his deeper throws at times and short throws across his body to the left. There's a small hitch delay, but that seems to be more of a comfort level than anything else.


There were also numerous penalties for the Jaguars today, as they had a group of referees for team practices.


"The worst thing was there were a lot of penalties. We have to take them out of our game. I’m looking more at the foolish penalties, lining up offside, jumping, the false starts, the pass interference’s, things like that," Bradley said after practice. "Aggressive penalties are going to be part of it. The foolish things we have to take care of. We talk about protect the team, stay on our feet, make good decisions, avoid collisions and things like that. For the most part we did well but there were other times we need to get taken care of. Those things are aggressive."


From my perspective, most of the penalties were called on the secondary for things like holding and pass interference.

Nice to hear that Copeland is looking good. I really liked him when I watched Louisville last year and feel he could make the roster and contribute this year.

I would hope Henne's stats would be better than Blake's on the first day of training camp.  He was playing in the NFL when Blake was playing JV football in high school.  All rookies are going to throw picks.  The important thing is that he doesn't fear failure at all and bounces back...a trait of the better quarterbacks in the league.

that's a very good sign. I saw Andrew Luck do that alot during his rookie season. It's all about how you respond.

Abry Jones stood out to me too last year.  Glad to hear that he is continuing to progress.  With those big guys, it is good to have quality depth.  I wonder if he'll start to press Miller a bit.

What you posted there was the highlight of practice for me. Not only the fact that Bortles showed the fortitude to continue to take chances with some risky throws - and complete them - after the INT, but ALSO that coach Bradley was ENCOURAGING this, and that makes me feel very good about Blake's chances and how good he could become. 

 

For SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO many years, we were stuck with buffoons like Del Rio and Mularkey who were the COMPLETE OPPOSITE regarding what they wanted from the QB position. With them it was always "play it safe"/ "don't take risks"... and I HATED that because I knew all that does is stifle potential. I don't think you can really develop "killer instinct" when you are conditioned to play "not to lose".

I'm really not worried about those kinds of injuries this time of year regarding Cecil, especially for a vet. As long as we aren't hearing about ACL problems, concussions, things of that sort I'm confident he'll be ready when we need him.

I can't wait to see some preseason games with BB5 at quarterback. For some reason I think he is player that shines more in games then practice. IF that is the case what a great change after suffering with Gabbert at the position! If the Oline can improve I also think Henne will have a much better season then last year.
