Question about Blake's arm strength

#41

Quote:I think Charlie Taafe was his QB coach (and offensive Coordinator).  Someone can feel free to correct me though.

But, that's still not so much a dedicated position coach where the sole focus is on the QB.

It can only help his progression if he's got a person who's primary responsibility is to work with him to make him a better player at his position of choice.

Never argue with idiots. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

I arm wrestled him last night at Hooters, and he won, so I guess his arm is okay.

I actually saw a few ducks...... Not worried tho.

You sure that wasn't his girlfriend?

No.  It was definitely him.

I arm wrestled her afterwards. I'm pretty sure I could have taken her, but Blake was kind of giving me the stink eye when I had her about 70%, so I let her win.  Honest I did.

Quote:Did I read correctly that he didn't have a QB coach at UCF?

I don't see one listed on their football staff on the UCF website.

If that's correct, and this kid did what he did at UCF without having the proper coaching coming from a position coach? Imagine how good he could be with some actual coaching?

I don't think there was a qb coach at ucf. Just the OC which isn't even close to the same.

Kinda proves pocket presence is just something you either have or you don't. Glad he has it.

Funnily enough most of the top NFL qbs at the moment probably have mediocre arms.

Accuracy and decisions are far more important

Agreed.

I see that as a good indication we've barely scratched the surface here. With coaching, he has the potential to be everything they hope he will inside EverBank.

One thing I saw that stood out is even this early in the game he's going through his progressions really well. There was one time where he was looking down the field to the left and then suddenly dumps it off to the right to the RB, it was so sudden i had to go back and look at it cause he didn't even look at the RB, just like he knew he was there.

Saw that too.  The rb was Storm Johnson who I'm sure he has a lot of chemistry with.

People really need to give it up with the whole Teddy Bridgewater thing. Who gives a crap about Bridgewater. Bridgewater and Manziel are now the enemy.. Bortles is your QB.

That said, I have no problems with wobbly passes from Bortles. That can be fixed with coaching. The main point is that his passes are getting where they need to be. That's all anyone can ask for in a QB.

Ask Peyton about his arm strength.

From Tom Brady's scouting report:

Quote:....Lacks a really strong arm. Can't drive the ball down the field and does not throw a really tight spiral...

He seems to be doing ok.

When it comes down to QB's, I really don't care how they throw it or the problems they have 'mechanically'. As long as its accurate and goes where it is supposed to I'm fine with it. Everyone has their own style and QB's should only be judged on how well they perform, not how they go about it, like any position.

BTW, let's not forget he's also got to adapt to the NFL which is why I'd like to see him start around half our games. He will gain almost nothing from sitting all year.

His offensive coordinator was his QB coach in college.   Coaches are only allowed to interact with student athletes for a limited number of hours in the day per NCAA rules, so  Taafe was likely spending a lot more time on strategic assignments and opponent gameplans for the upcoming week than throwing fundamentals.   Bortles is also a little behind   in that the  played in a single wing T option offense in high school.

This is why the Jags are so smart to sit him for a year and make sure his fundamentals are rock solid before they put him on the big stage.    The fundamentals need to be second nature and involuntary muscle reaction by the time he's asked to execute the offensive assignments and memorize weekly opponent gameplans and tendencies.

Developing an underwater throwing training apparatus will help develop his weak arm and tighten that spiral.

I honestly thought after the Gabbert debacle that our fans would quit evaluating training camp capabilities.

Gabbert was one of the best training camp QBs ever to come out of the NFL.  The dude was Mr. July.

Blake Bortles has the size and athleticism that will make him appealing to NFL teams early in the draft. Bortles' best trait may be his pocket presence. He takes advantage of his big frame and quick feet to extend plays while keeping his eyes downfield. Bortles need to refine his lower body mechanics a bit in order to get better velocity on his passes. He has the arm strength, but he doesn't always drive the ball effectively down the field.

Seriously... Gabbert was the man while wearing that red practice jersey.

Some players need that real game feel for it to click for them (Iverson).
