Dave Caldwell: Draft Profile

#1

I think someone might have done this before but now that we have another draft class in the books it might be cool to look at again to see if we can glean any sort of method to the madness.

Our two draft classes:

2013                              School                         Conference            Florida School        BCS

1) Luke Joeckel             Texas A&M                    SEC                              ~                         Yes

2) Jonathan Cyprien       Florida Int.                     USA                            Yes                         ~

3) Dwayne Gratz            UCONN                          AAC                              ~                         Yes

4) Ace Sanders              South Carolina               SEC                              ~                         Yes

5) Denard Robinson       Michigan                        Big 10                           ~                         Yes

6) Josh Evans                Florida                           SEC                           Yes                        Yes

7) Jeremy Harris            New Mexico St.              IND.                              ~                            ~

7) Demtrius McCray       App. St.                          Southern                       ~                            ~

2014                              School                         Conference            Florida School         BCS

1) Blake Bortles             UCF                               AAC                            Yes                       Yes

2) Marqise Lee              USC                               Pac 12                         ~                          Yes

2) Allen Robinson           Penn St                         Big 10                           ~                          Yes

3) Bradon Linder            Miami                             ACC                            Yes                       Yes

4) Aaron Colvin              Oklahoma                      Big 12                            ~                         Yes

5) Telvin Smith               Florida State                  ACC                            Yes                       Yes

5) Chris Smith                Arkansas                       SEC                              ~                          Yes

6) Luke Bowanko           Virginia                          ACC                               ~                         Yes

7) Storm Johnson           UCF                              AAC                             Yes                       Yes

Takeaways

-Seems to prefer BCS schools throughout the draft

-Dips into Florida schools regularly

-Not many West Coast picks

-Two players coached in college by current coaches (Jeremy Harris, Brandon Linder)

-Not scared off by "redshirt" players (Denard Robinson, Aaron Colvin)

-Willing to execute trades for slight pick movement up or down in the draft (no huge trades so far)

Any other similarities or has observations please feel free to share.

Interesting. I know nothing about college football so I have no idea what any of this means Big Grin

He goes heavy in each draft. First year he went after secondary players. This year offensive playmakers.

I was thinking this too. If there is a position of team need, he seems to take 2-3 players of that position.

2 safeties and 3 corners in '13, 2 receivers in '14.

Agreed and Larry pointed this out as well during the draft. When Caldwell perceives a weakness, he pursues multiple options to address that weakness. Personally, I like to think that it's not just for one specific position but rather a group that he deems as a weakness. I point to him drafting only one QB in this draft while stocking up on WRs.

I'm trying to make myself more informed and less opinionated.

Stop saying whatever stupid thing you're talking about and pay attention to all the interesting things I have to say!

Last year we got 3 or 4 potential starters out of the last.. I expect no different this year although eventually when the talent builds up the need for immediate starters will slow down.

IIRC so did gene Smith.

Only two drafts and it already looks better than 2007-2012 combined by a wide, wide margin.

Dave is the best drafter the Jags ever had IMO. 2nd is Coughlin.
